Influenza outbreak, children are susceptible, experts provide advice to identify the condition

Winter is approaching, and respiratory infectious diseases such as influenza are entering a high-risk period. Experts say that the current epidemic of respiratory pathogens presents a "mixed combat" feature, and parents can use the "three-step identification method" to preliminarily determine the condition of their children and timely identify flu symptoms. Zhai Jia, Vice President of Tianjin Children's Hospital, introduced that the currently prevalent respiratory infectious disease pathogens include influenza virus, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, etc. Among them, the positive rate of influenza virus has increased significantly, manifested as typical symptoms such as high fever and body aches; Respiratory syncytial virus mainly attacks infants and young children under 2 years old, especially those under 6 months old, which can easily lead to bronchiolitis; Although rhinovirus usually only causes the common cold, it is one of the main pathogens that lead to recurrent colds and frequent hospital visits in children. Experts suggest that parents can use the "three-step identification method" to preliminarily assess their child's condition. Zhai Jia said that parents should first observe the mental state of their children. Children with common colds usually have a decent mental state, while those with influenza and pneumonia often feel lethargic, abnormally irritable, and sleepy; Secondly, attention should be paid to the child's respiratory condition. The common cold usually presents with nasal congestion and runny nose. Once there is shortness of breath, severe coughing with phlegm, or the "three concave signs" (supraclavicular fossa, suprasternal fossa, and intercostal space depression during inhalation), one should be alert to pneumonia; In addition, temperature changes should be closely monitored. Influenza often accompanies persistent high fever and ordinary antipyretic drugs have poor efficacy. Zhai Jia suggests that flu patients should take medication under the guidance of a doctor, rest adequately, balance nutrition, drink plenty of water, and eat easily digestible foods. Families with conditions should ensure proper isolation between patients and family members; If isolation is not possible, masks should be worn for protection. In addition, attention should be paid to environmental hygiene, and windows should be opened regularly indoors for ventilation. Experts suggest that individuals aged 60 and above, chronic disease patients, children, pregnant women, and other groups are at high risk of developing severe illness after contracting influenza. When the above-mentioned population experiences fever during the influenza epidemic season, they should attach great importance to it and seek medical attention as soon as possible. Once diagnosed with influenza virus infection, they should receive antiviral treatment as soon as possible. If there are no contraindications for vaccination, individuals at high risk of severe influenza should actively receive the flu vaccine before the flu season arrives. (New Society)
