On November 25th, Beijing People's Art Theatre announced the release of Chekhov's famous drama "The Cherry Orchard" and invited Georgian director David Doyashvili to direct it. This is the first collaboration between Beijing People's Art Theatre and Georgian artists, aimed at expanding the presentation ideas of world classic dramas on the contemporary Chinese stage. Feng Yuanzheng, the director of Beijing People's Art Theatre, introduced that Doi Ashvili is currently the artistic director of Georgia's New Theatre. He has participated in the Beijing People's Art Theatre International Invitation Exhibition for two consecutive years with Chekhov's "Seagull" and Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Through rich stage performance techniques and innovative interpretations, he has modernized the interpretation of world classic plays. The Cherry Orchard "is Chekhov's last play, which showcases the decline of the aristocracy and the historical process of being replaced by the emerging bourgeoisie through the change of ownership of a cherry orchard. Since its premiere in Moscow in January 1904, the play has been consistently performed worldwide. Doi Ashvili said that the collaboration with Beijing People's Art Theatre on "Cherry Orchard" is a fusion and cross-cultural dialogue between Georgian theatrical traditions and contemporary Chinese perspectives. He hopes that the audience can not only see the characters in Chekhov's works, but also see their own life journey and generate new thoughts. (New Society)
