China's satellite communication development has entered the fast lane

2025-11-26

On November 22, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology officially launched the commercial trial of satellite IoT business, supporting eligible enterprises to carry out satellite IoT business in accordance with laws and regulations, aiming to further stimulate the vitality of the private economy, support the safe and healthy development of commercial aerospace, promote the deep integration of the real economy and the digital economy, and serve the construction of a manufacturing power, aerospace power, network power, and digital China. As an important component of new infrastructure, China's satellite communication development has entered the fast lane since the beginning of this year. Up to now, 13 sets of satellite Internet LEO satellites have been successfully launched and 108 Qianfan Constellation satellites have been deployed. Relevant private constellations are also accelerating the construction progress and accelerating the development of China's satellite communication industry. What is the development trend of China's satellite IoT? What impact will conducting commercial trials of satellite IoT services have on industrial development? Recently, Liu Haijiao, Deputy Director of the Wireless Informatization Research Department at the Institute of Technology and Standards of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, interpreted the industry's development trends, application scenarios, business models, and other aspects. Satellite Internet of Things conforms to the trend of "intelligent connection of all things", which uses satellite communication technology to connect massive devices on the ground, in the ocean, and in the air, providing data collection and transmission services. Unlike directly connecting satellites to mobile phones, satellite IoT mainly provides services for 'things', but it is not far from individual users and will deeply affect our production and life in the future, "said Liu Haijiao. Informationization and intelligence have become important selling points of automobiles. The satellite Internet of Things can provide intelligent networking services for automobiles, transmitting information such as their location and working conditions. Drivers can obtain a more intelligent, convenient, and safe driving experience. With the booming development of the low altitude economy, the satellite Internet of Things provides unmanned aerial vehicles with a transmission channel for precise location, control instructions, and other data, enabling convenient and efficient delivery services. Outdoor exploration often reaches areas with insufficient ground communication network coverage. Satellite Internet of Things can provide alarm information transmission services for dedicated handheld terminals, wearable devices, etc. People in distress can use satellite Internet of Things "one click alarm" and "one click distress call" to obtain timely rescue. In addition, the satellite Internet of Things also covers typical industrial application scenarios such as ocean fishery, energy and water conservancy, transportation and logistics, and industrial Internet, and further expands the service scope of the Internet of Things by virtue of its wide area coverage. At present, China's satellite Internet of Things is in its infancy, but overall it has shown a promising and thriving development trend. The commercial trial of satellite IoT business will bring multiple positive impacts to both the user end and the industry end, "said Liu Haijiao." At the user end, by conducting commercial trials and utilizing satellite IoT to provide comprehensive information services for vehicles, ships, drones, oil and gas pipelines, industrial equipment, etc., it will promote the deep integration of the real economy and digital economy, and promote intelligent, green, and integrated development. On the industrial side, by conducting commercial experiments, the commercial closed loop of satellite IoT can be achieved, driving innovation aggregation in the upstream and downstream of the satellite manufacturing, rocket launch, terminal research and development industry chain, effectively promoting the development of commercial aerospace, further enriching the supply of satellite communication, stimulating the vitality of market entities, enhancing industry service capabilities, and promoting the formation of scale effects in satellite IoT. Currently, there is active exploration and innovation in direct connected satellites such as mobile phones, cars, and drones. Satellite communication is rapidly expanding from professional fields to the general public, and is expected to form new economic growth points. Liu Haijiao stated that with the joint promotion of policies, technology, and markets, the satellite IoT industry will usher in important development opportunities. In the future, satellite IoT will deeply integrate with various industries, forming a group of popular and large-scale application scenarios. Meanwhile, with the accelerated development of low orbit satellite IoT, global services will also become an important capability and significant feature of satellite IoT. In terms of standardization, 3GPP is developing IoT NTN standards, which will lead the evolution of satellite IoT towards the goal of space earth integration and ubiquitous connectivity. In addition, satellite IoT will deeply integrate with AI, giving rise to a series of new application scenarios and business models, achieving a leap from "Internet of Things" to "Intelligent Internet of Things".
