From the 22nd to the 23rd, the 2025 Guangdong Dragon and Lion Championship was held passionately at the Suixi County Sports Center in Zhanjiang City. 45 elite teams from all over Guangdong competed together, showcasing the vigorous charm of the Southern style lion dance. This competition includes four major events: Dragon Dance Optional Routine, Southern Lion Traditional Optional Routine, Southern Lion High Stake Optional Routine, and Southern Lion High Stake Standardized Routine. On the field, eight local powerhouses, including the previous "Triple Crown" Suixi Hetou Qunxing Lion Dance Troupe and the Suixi Longwan Dragon Lion Art Troupe, which won the "Mountain Flower Award", competed at home with elite teams from all over the province. In order to break geographical restrictions, the event was broadcasted simultaneously through multiple media platforms, allowing audiences across the country to "watch the game from the cloud" and experience the shocking scene of the Dragon Lion Battle, effectively enhancing the dissemination volume and public participation of the event. It is reported that the Suixi Xingshi originated in the Ming and Qing dynasties and was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006. Its performances are divided into two categories: traditional lions and high pile lions. Among them, the high pile lion completes movements such as probing and flying piles on a pile array that is 14.8 meters long and 2.9 meters high, with the highest pile span reaching 3.7 meters, and is known as a "Chinese masterpiece". There are currently 360 folk lion dance troupes in Suixi County, with over 13000 members. The high stakes lion dance teams such as Wenche and Xuwu have won honors such as the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Mountain Flower Award and the Guinness World Records for their difficult skills, and participated in performances before the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The performance program includes lion dance, green picking, and green spitting, and is equipped with instruments such as gongs, drums, cymbals, and conches. The local community promotes cultural heritage through activities such as intangible cultural heritage entering campuses and IP image design competitions. The government department promotes the integrated development of "lion dance culture+tourism+sports" through measures such as building a lion dance museum and holding a "lion super" competition. The 2024 Guangdong Dragon and Lion Championship will be held in Suixi, showcasing the contemporary vitality of lion dance culture. The lion dance is not only a cultural symbol of the county, but also a core lever for linking industries and activating tourism. Cui Kaixu, Vice Chairman of the Suixi County Political Consultative Conference and Director of the County Cultural, Radio, Tourism, and Sports Bureau, stated that Suixi is one of the important birthplaces of lion dance culture. In recent years, the county has actively created a cultural event centered on lion dance culture, promoting tourism through competitions and industrial development through sports activities, making "Suixi Lion Dance" a beautiful business card for Suixi culture, tourism, and sports.
