Barbecue Academy opens classes, education must not forget 'market'

According to Red Star News, the Yueyang Barbecue College held by Yueyang Open University has officially opened classes recently. Four months ago, after official Xuan of Yueyang Open University and Yueyang Barbecue Association jointly founded Yueyang Barbecue College and Yueyang Barbecue Research Institute, they were questioned on the Internet. With these voices, "Is it for the sake of sensationalism?" and "Is it for revenue?" the "Barbecue Academy," which has officially debuted, is about to undergo social scrutiny. According to the Vice President of Yueyang Open University, the current class is the first "Barbecue Elite Education Enhancement Class" of Yueyang Barbecue College, with a total of 26 students, all of whom are local barbecue restaurant owners aged 25 to 35 in Yueyang. They study part-time for two and a half years and adopt a school enterprise joint training mode. After completing the study period and passing the assessment, the school will issue a diploma in Business Management. From the above information, it can be seen that the operation of Yueyang Barbecue College is quite formal. Although it is still in the early stage of classes and the educational outcomes are difficult to evaluate, some information is still worth noting. For example, in the introduction, the school leaders admitted that the school hopes to help students master a livelihood skill, so that they can better integrate into society, and barbecue is a light asset industry, "one stove can support a family". There aren't many big words here, but it's also another aspect of education that cannot be ignored. Education is certainly a lofty goal, let alone "higher education" (junior college is also a type of higher education), and its narrative structure can be "cultivating leading figures", "enhancing urban brand", "driving cultural and tourism economy", and so on. These visions are understandable. And education also requires tangible economic returns: whether spending money on reading can significantly improve livelihoods. This is also understandable, in fact, it is almost everyone's unspoken thinking background. No matter what major is chosen, such considerations are essential, it is just a difference in the implementation path. Therefore, in the perspective of education, the "market" cannot be omitted, and we should not only make lofty statements, but also respond to real market demands. As long as we acknowledge the function of education, we will find that the name "Barbecue Academy" is not lacking in seriousness, and even worth encouraging - clearly telling students what to teach and what to do after graduation, with clear paths, specific goals, practical models, and saving communication and understanding costs for both parties. Similar measures are not uncommon. For example, in 2016, Qianjiang, Hubei, which was known for producing crayfish, established Qianjiang Lobster College within Jianghan Art Vocational College in Hubei; In 2020, Pingjiang, Hunan Province, renowned for its spicy snack industry nationwide, established a spicy snack class within Pingjiang Vocational and Technical School; In 2021, Sichuan Yibin officially established the Burning Noodles College within Yibin Vocational and Technical College; wait. The Lobster Academy has received a good response, with the dean stating that the employment rate is almost 100%, and graduates can earn over 100000 yuan per year after working for 8 months. These characteristic majors or colleges that have not been seen before can achieve "great success", some may have high operating costs, large fluctuations in industry cycles, some may have difficulty implementing their curriculum systems, and may also face practical problems such as market demand saturation and enrollment difficulties. But this does not hinder their significance as an attempt: striving to connect education with local industries, linking the talent cultivation chain and supply chain, so that schools are no longer isolated islands, but become part of the regional economic ecology, responding to real livelihood needs. Education does not need to be limited to a single school, nor does it need to be confined to traditional professional catalogs. As long as it can directly demonstrate its value to real life and give students a skill, the name is not important. Why does education always need to be packaged "mysteriously", so that students can learn to barbecue and mix Luosifen, why not "advanced"? Moreover, these skills support the livelihoods of countless small shops and families, as well as the real consumer market. Bringing them into the perspective of higher education is an affirmation of the value of human fireworks and helps to dispel prejudices and misconceptions that easily distinguish between high and low. The leaders of the Barbecue Academy also stated that they will deepen cooperation with the local Disabled Persons' Federation, human resources and social security departments, and the targeted assistance in Baojing County, Xiangxi Prefecture, to launch training for entrepreneurial and employment groups, including people with disabilities, and targeted assistance targets. If it can be done, then it would naturally be better. The so-called 'education changes destiny' does not need to be grand or push students far, as long as it can help them get out of the current predicament, it is already enough. (New Society)
