Free HPV vaccination is a timely measure to serve people's livelihoods

2025-11-14

Recently, the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, together with seven departments including the National Health Commission and the Ministry of Education, jointly issued a notice on the inclusion of human papillomavirus vaccines in the national immunization plan. It was decided to include HPV vaccines in the national immunization plan and organize various regions to provide free two doses of bivalent HPV vaccines (with a six-month interval) for girls over 13 years old born after November 10, 2011. This work will commence on November 10th. The human papillomavirus vaccine, also known as the HPV vaccine, is a vaccine used to prevent cervical cancer in women and genital cancer and warts in men and women. Data shows that in 2022, there were approximately 151000 new cases of cervical cancer and 56000 deaths in China. The policy introduced by the country to include it in the national immunization program is a timely move to promote the coordinated development of public health and socio-economic development, and to ensure the physical health of the people. Incorporating the HPV vaccine into the national immunization program is a significant policy that benefits the people. Although domestic women have a high willingness to self fund vaccination, the overall vaccination rate is relatively low. Incorporating into the national immunization program and providing free vaccination for eligible women can effectively ensure an increase in vaccination rates. At the same time, for eligible women in rural areas, self funded HPV vaccination is a "non essential" expense beyond their daily life awareness. In addition, the medical conditions in rural areas are relatively weak, and free vaccination provided by the government can fully cover all eligible women in all areas, providing them with the necessary physical health and immune protection. In June of this year, the Central Office and the State Council issued the "Opinions on Further Ensuring and Improving People's Livelihood and Focusing on Solving the Urgent Difficulties and Worries of the Masses", which encouraged places with conditions to vaccinate eligible girls against HPV, with the aim of improving the accessibility of diversified social services. From support and encouragement to formal inclusion, what we see is that the Party and the state continuously benefit the broad masses of the people in the formulation of public policies and the provision of public services, and effectively carry out livelihood work that concerns the people, promoting inclusive and shared development. This is not only an institutional measure to implement the "Healthy China 2030" planning outline, but also a specific action to implement the strategy of prioritizing health development. Health is an inevitable requirement for promoting comprehensive human development and a fundamental condition for economic and social development. Promoting the construction of a healthy China is not just a slogan, but has been translated into concrete actions. In addition to incorporating the HPV vaccine into the national immunization plan, various institutional measures such as creating a "15 minute fitness circle", promoting the opening of public sports facilities, strengthening student physical fitness monitoring, preventing and controlling myopia and obesity, and incorporating sports into academic assessments have also been implemented. The country is continuously increasing its support for health and other fields, and the beautiful vision of improving people's health level is becoming a reality. (New Society)
