6G is coming towards us!
2025-11-14
It is expected that 6G will be the first commercially available in China, Europe, India, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Vietnam and other countries and regions from 2030 onwards; By 2040, the global number of 6G connections is expected to exceed 5 billion. ”On November 13th, at the 2025 6G Development Conference, the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) Greater China President, Si Han, released this prediction, making the outline of the 6G era even clearer. The theme of this conference is "Smart Connected Global, Building a 6G Technology Innovation Ecosystem". Experts attending the conference believe that as an important digital information infrastructure in the next decade, 6G will achieve the integration of communication, perception, computing, and intelligence technologies. Its service targets will expand from humans, machines, and objects to intelligent agents, and its service space will extend to the integration of space, sky, and earth, ultimately realizing the vision of "intelligent connection of all things and digital twin". This year marks the comprehensive launch of 6G standardization research, with the dual upgrade of terminals and applications. ”Zhang Yunming, Deputy Minister of Industry and Information Technology, stated that "6G is at a critical stage of accelerated technological innovation and clear industrial direction, and it urgently needs consensus and close cooperation among all parties involved in global industry, academia, research, and application. ”Terminal innovation is the core link in building the 6G ecosystem. Wu Hequan, academician of the CAE Member, pointed out that AI mobile phones will lead the generation of smart phones, and the revolutionary experience brought by its large end model embedded in the operating system (OS) will activate the trillion yuan scale industry. It is expected that by 2028, AI powered smartphones will account for 54% of global smartphone shipments. On this basis, intelligent smartphones with perception, memory, and planning capabilities, as well as hands-free AI glasses and other external devices, will accelerate their popularity. Wu Hequan stated that the deep integration of AI and Extended Reality (XR) will become an important driving force for 6G, driving users to shift from "watching videos" to "entering videos". At the industrial application level, 6G will achieve collaborative development between consumer oriented (2C) and enterprise/industry oriented (2B). Currently, the proportion of 2B investment by mobile operators is nearly 2/3, with an annual revenue growth of 6%, making it a business growth point. In the 6G era, industry-specific AI modules such as machine tool intelligent agents and robot intelligent agents will increase the proportion of 2B revenue. Their demand for high bandwidth, low latency, and high reliability in networks will drive continuous upgrades in communication technology. In addition, diversified forms such as intelligent connected vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicle onboard terminals, and directly connected satellite mobile terminals are giving rise to new applications such as sensory integration and sky ground connectivity. Standards and early deployment of spectrum resources are the foundation for the development of 6G. The attending experts proposed that global mobile data traffic will continue to grow in the next five years, and the demand for spectrum in core cities will significantly increase. At the World Radiocommunication Conference to be held in Shanghai in 2027, key spectrum resources for 6G will be identified. Based on this, spectrum planning and standard setting have become key supports for the development of 6G. 6G is a gradual upgrade of 5G. Sihan introduced that GSMA advocates a "two-step" strategy, which first fully unleashes the potential of 5G, builds a solid network foundation, and then achieves supply-demand synergy through technological innovations such as AI native networks and non terrestrial networks. Wen Ku, Chairman of the China Communications Standards Association, stated that the development of 6G is a continuous evolution process, and the first version of the standard does not need to pursue perfection, but needs to balance cost reduction and efficiency improvement while reserving iteration space. He proposed three key directions: terminal innovation, intelligent integration, and satellite ground integration, and called for global collaborative efforts to tackle shortcomings such as satellite network deployment and frequency support, and jointly build unified international standards. On site, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology released the "6G Technology Test Results and Platform Capability Enhancement Plan". Zhang Yunming revealed that China has formed over 300 key 6G technology reserves and established a three in one R&D system of "technology research and development, experimental verification, and iterative optimization". Through IMT-2030 (6G) promotion, the group has gathered more than 100 domestic and foreign units for collaborative innovation and completed the first phase of technology testing. As of November 2025, China's 6G patent applications accounted for 40.3% of the global total. Among them, Beijing has formed a collaborative pattern of "1 overall group+1 laboratory+2 research and development bases+2 industrial bases", and is making every effort to build a leading area for 6G innovation and development, laying a solid foundation for the commercial landing and industrial upgrading of 6G. The conference is jointly hosted by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology and the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group, and jointly organized by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology and the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone Management Committee.
