Cabbage was looted, and rumors should not be the only thing that needs to be taken seriously

2025-11-13

Recently, a false video claiming that "cabbage is free" has been widely spread on social media, causing a farmer in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, to loot nearly 200 acres of cabbage waiting to be harvested, resulting in serious economic losses. On November 11th, the joint investigation team of Songshan District in Chifeng City issued an official notice stating that the Songshan District Committee and Government attach great importance to it and have established a joint investigation team to carry out investigation and disposal work. The follow-up situation will be promptly released to the society. The video circulating on site shows that many people carry burlap bags, drive electric vehicles, and some even drive trucks into vegetable fields to collect cabbage. The crowd receded and the vegetable field was in a mess. Mr. Li, a farmer, introduced that these cabbages have already been connected to sales channels and are planning to be harvested and put on the market one after another. However, he did not expect to suffer huge losses due to this incident. He said that there are still more than 200 acres of corn next to the cabbage field that have not been harvested yet. In order to prevent similar looting situations from happening, personnel have been organized overnight to harvest the corn. Why do these people think they can take neatly arranged cabbage from other people's vegetable fields? According to Mr. Li's preliminary estimation, the area of cabbage harvested this time is about 200 acres. Based on the current market situation, the loss per acre of land is about 5000 yuan, and the overall loss is close to 1 million yuan. From this perspective, the initiator of false information is already suspected of "intentionally disrupting public order by other means" as stipulated in the Public Security Administration Punishment Law, and should bear corresponding legal responsibility. In this incident, false information acted as a signal amplifier, and many people rushed to the scene immediately upon receiving the signal, completely ignoring the truth. In fact, whether it's crops in the fields or scattered goods on the road, there are always people who treat the belongings that others cannot take care of as "pie in the sky" and engage in looting without any reason. On the one hand, the readily available wealth amplifies some people's mentality of getting something for nothing; On the other hand, those who take advantage of the situation often firmly believe in the principle of 'the law does not punish the people', treating it as a cost free plunder that completely disregards moral and legal boundaries. According to the Law on Public Security Administration Punishments, those who loot public and private property shall be detained for not less than five days but not more than ten days, and may be fined not more than 500 yuan; Those with serious circumstances shall be detained for not less than ten days but not more than fifteen days, and may be fined not more than one thousand yuan. If the amount is large or there are other serious circumstances, it is even more likely to be suspected of the crime of gathering and looting as stipulated in the Criminal Law. In a sense, every time there is a gathering and looting, it can be seen as an intuitive "legal education lesson". Whether the public can see from it whether "breaking the law will be punished" or "the law will not punish the public" depends on the next action of the relevant departments - if every robber can feel the pain of the situation, how dare those who are tempted by wealth to act?
