573 prehistoric to Shang Dynasty stone city settlement sites discovered in Yulin, Shaanxi

On the 11th, it was learned from the cultural relics and archaeological exploration team of Yulin City that after nearly 6 years of field archaeological investigation, 573 prehistoric to Shang Dynasty stone city settlement sites were discovered in Yulin. These city sites lasted for about 1800 years, providing new information for a comprehensive understanding of the origin, development, dissemination, and evolution of prehistoric city sites in northern China. It is reported that the distribution space of Shicheng has undergone a transfer. From the late Yangshao period to the early Longshan period, stone cities were mainly distributed in the southern part of Yulin, while the early stone cities of Shenmu and Fugu in the northern part of Yulin were relatively rare. In the late Longshan period, most of the early stone cities in southern Yulin were abandoned or rapidly declined, while Shenmu, Fugu, Yuyang and other areas in northeastern Yulin became the main construction areas for a new batch of stone cities, forming a prehistoric stone city distribution pattern centered on the Shenmu Shimao site. The stone cities of Yulin during the Shang Dynasty were mostly the continuation of prehistoric stone cities, and their spatial pattern can be divided into two regions: the Lijiaya culture occupies both sides of the Yellow River, and the Zhukaigou culture occupies the northwestern region. The prehistoric stone cities in Yulin are distributed along both banks of the river, often with multiple city sites clustered together. There are also a large number of ordinary settlements without stone walls around them, showing a clear group relationship. The outline of Shicheng settlement includes various spatial layout types such as single city circle, "parallel" multi city circle, "series" multi city circle, and "nested" multi city circle, and there are also functional areas such as residential areas and cemeteries without defense facilities outside the city wall circle. These stone cities have gone through a process of changes in settlement scale from small to large, spatial layout from simple to complex, and construction technology from primitive to mature, gradually strengthening their hierarchical differentiation characteristics. The discovery of the Shicheng site in this survey indicates that the Hetao area, centered around Yulin, was a peripheral or subsidiary zone of various cultural systems during the early and middle stages of the Yangshao culture, and its cultural and social processes lagged behind the cultural centers for a long time; From the late Yangshao period to the Longshan period, there was a sudden increase in settlements, the emergence of Shicheng communities, significant differentiation of settlement levels, and a high degree of aggregation of ritual elements. It has entered the early ritual society, indicating that this area has become a new cultural center and civilization highland. Experts say that this sudden change in cultural status and social progress is closely related to the cultural influence of the Yan Liao region, North China region, Northwest region, and even Southern region on the Loess Plateau. It is an important entry point for observing the rise and fall cycle of cultural status on the Loess Plateau and an important source for exploring the Xia Shang civilization in the Central Plains.
