Ukrainian youth Anastasia Š pironok: China is an important promoter of global governance

2025-11-11

In the current era of globalization intertwined with geopolitical patterns, the new generation of young people is becoming the core force driving cross-border dialogue and world change. From climate diplomacy to digital governance, from human rights initiatives to educational equality, they have demonstrated through their actions that cross-border communication and understanding are key to building a peaceful and sustainable future. Anastasiia Shpirook from Ukraine is one of the representatives. Recently, she had a conversation with Anna Giada D'Angelo, the international correspondent of Outlook New Era magazine in Italy, in Bern, Switzerland, sharing her views on youth responsibility and cross-border collaboration. Ukrainian youth Anastasia Š pironok (right) and Xinhua News Agency international correspondent Anna Giada D'Angelo (left) traveled from Ukraine to Switzerland, nurturing the seeds of understanding in a dual culture. Anastasia was born and raised in Lviv, Ukraine, and during her studies in international economic relations at Ivan Franco State University, she demonstrated a much greater passion for foreign affairs and international cooperation than her peers. At that time, she was not only an excellent student, but also took the initiative to assume the responsibilities of a student union cadre, leading the organization of exchange meetings with ambassadors and policy makers from various countries, and promoting the implementation of practical projects for youth empowerment and citizen participation. She deeply understands the profound impact of international decision-making on national peace, people's livelihood security, and social development, and this firsthand experience has become the initial driving force for her to deeply cultivate the field of international relations. Later, Anastasia moved to Switzerland and enrolled in the University of Basel to study Political Science and English Language and Literature. During her time in Switzerland, she joined the Basel Model United Nations team and honed her diplomatic negotiation skills through role-playing; Participate in the Swiss Youth Council and speak up for the demands of the youth community. Anastasia is currently striving to translate theoretical knowledge into practical actions to promote human rights protection. The experience of these international projects exposed her to a broader world - the multicultural environment made her deeply realize that "dialogue" is the key to breaking stereotypes, establishing emotional connections, and jointly shaping her core beliefs: peace and understanding are not abstract concepts, but systems that need to be gradually built through empathy, education, and daily cooperation. It is this belief that guided her to further engage in youth affairs and public diplomacy. Youth responsibility: from "participant" to "leader", build a bridge for global cooperation through action. In May 2022, Anastasia witnessed the first World Economic Forum after the COVID-19 epidemic to debate and seek consensus among leaders, entrepreneurs and activists around global governance issues. That was a highly symbolic moment - after years of uncertainty, people re realized that 'cooperation' is more important than 'confrontation'. What shocked her even more was that young representatives from around the world dared to challenge and speak out, proposing their own solutions on issues such as climate policy and digital governance. That experience completely changed my perspective. ”She saw up close how representatives from all sides debated global decision-making issues, how different viewpoints collided, and how common ground was found. In her view, contemporary youth are no longer mere observers of history, but real participants and even leaders - "Today's youth are bridges between nations, bringing digital skills, fresh perspectives, and empathy." Through student diplomacy, civic movements, and digital activism, young people have played an important role in global dialogues such as human rights and sustainable development. She emphasized that young people never lack creativity, but are often limited in their development due to a lack of opportunities. When the door of opportunity opens, the innovation, vitality, and inclusiveness brought by young people are exactly what traditional systems sometimes lack. Therefore, she has always advocated for the representation of youth on the international stage "not as a symbolic gesture, but as a structural necessity", and is committed to promoting youth participation from "symbolic voice" to "substantive integration" in the decision-making process. In her envisioned future, global challenges are a shared responsibility of all humanity; The measure of social progress is no longer just GDP growth, but also the enhancement of human dignity and the continuation of peace. And China occupies an important position in this future vision. Connecting China with the world and building a common future through cooperation. Although Anastasia has not yet had the opportunity to visit China in person, through her previous in-depth exchanges with Chinese youth, she has already formed a transcendent understanding of this Eastern country. I have always admired China's profound cultural heritage and witnessed its growing role in global affairs. In her eyes, China is a vivid example of perfectly integrating traditional cultural heritage with modern vitality - from the wisdom contained in ancient civilization to breakthroughs in technological innovation, China's development path retains its own characteristics while providing new ideas for global governance. When it comes to specific impressions of China, she said that China's emphasis on education is not only reflected in hardware investment, but also in long-term planning for talent cultivation; The value of "collective effort" has enabled China to demonstrate strong social cohesion in responding to global challenges such as the pandemic and advancing poverty alleviation; The positive significance of the "long-term vision" is clearly reflected from the "the Belt and Road" initiative to the "Global Development Initiative" - China has always promoted mutually beneficial and win-win international cooperation from a more forward-looking perspective. She specifically pointed out that these initiatives are not simply policy frameworks, but provide tangible cooperation opportunities for global youth: whether it is cross-border academic exchange projects or practical platforms in the field of sustainable development, China welcomes the participation of youth from all countries with an open attitude. Anastasia has a profound understanding of China's role on the global stage: "Today's China is not only an economic powerhouse, but also a core participant in shaping global governance. Its influence extends far beyond the trade field, to multiple dimensions such as technological innovation, sustainable development, and policy-making. For me, understanding China is essentially understanding the future direction of international cooperation." She further pointed out that there is vast cooperation space between China and European countries in areas such as climate transition, green technology, and education cooperation, and establishing academic exchanges and partnership relationships is an effective way to bring each other closer and build mutual trust. If given the opportunity to visit China, in terms of culture and education, she hopes to enter Beijing and Shanghai to experience the core role played by the two cities in academic exchanges and diplomatic activities; In terms of natural and cultural diversity, Yunnan, Sichuan and other regions are her first choice. "The ecological protection practices and ethnic cultural inheritance there may provide new references for global sustainable development; As a passionate practitioner of sustainable development, she is most concerned about China's efforts in renewable energy and carbon neutrality projects. She wants to gain a firsthand understanding of China's technological innovations in areas such as photovoltaics and wind power, and how these technologies benefit ordinary people. Of course, more important than sightseeing is "dialogue" - she has previously had exchanges with some Chinese students and youth leaders on "how youth can play a role in climate governance, immigration issues, and peace building". "Those exchanges have made me feel the sense of responsibility and innovative thinking of Chinese youth, and our views on many global issues are highly consistent." She looks forward to more such deep interactions in the future. The direction of one's aspirations knows no bounds, and the distance between mountains and seas cannot be limited. When young people from all over the world join hands and replace barriers with empathy and observation with action, global challenges will eventually be transformed into opportunities for common growth. This is the mission of the new generation of youth, and also the necessary path to a more connected and resilient world. (Xinhua News Agency) Article: Tao Yiwei Picture: Anna Giada D'Angelo
