'Digital Plus' enhances green trade competitiveness

2025-11-03

Cutting edge technologies represented by big data, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and other digital technologies are deeply integrated into the entire trade process. Foreign trade enterprises should further integrate green concepts throughout the entire process of trade activities, accelerate the use of digital technology, and comprehensively enhance their green and low-carbon development capabilities. The Proposal of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Formulating the 15th Five Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development clearly proposes to promote market diversification and integration of domestic and foreign trade, optimize and upgrade goods trade, expand intermediate goods trade and green trade, and promote balanced development of imports and exports. With the significant acceleration of global green and low-carbon transformation, more and more countries and regions regard the development of green trade as a key strategic measure to enhance international competitiveness and regulatory discourse power in the low-carbon field. During the 14th Five Year Plan period, China's foreign trade enterprises took the initiative to seek change, actively adapting to changes in the international situation through a series of measures such as developing green products, improving production processes, optimizing energy management, and building green supply chains, achieving significant results. In 2024, China's "new three types" exports will increase by 2.6 times compared to 2020, driving the continuous optimization of China's export product structure towards high-tech, high value-added, green and low-carbon directions. Behind the rapid growth of green product exports is the comprehensive deepening of green production concepts in foreign trade enterprises. Data shows that as of 2024, China has built 6430 national level green factories, accounting for about 20% of the total manufacturing output value. Among them, 1382 new national level green factories were cultivated throughout 2024. On this basis, a group of leading enterprises are further moving towards "zero carbon factories". Taking Ningde Times as an example, through zero carbon design, zero carbon manufacturing, zero carbon supply, zero carbon electricity, and circular ecological construction covering battery design, production, and recycling, a leading zero carbon production system has been built, which has obtained a crucial "green pass" for its products to enter the European market. Green collaboration in the supply chain has gradually become a consensus. By formulating green procurement standards, promoting supply chain carbon footprint accounting, and advancing digital platform construction, China's green trade development is accelerating the formation of systematic advantages. Cutting edge technologies represented by big data, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and other digital technologies are deeply integrated into the entire process and various links of trade, injecting strong impetus into the innovative development of green trade. In the future, foreign trade enterprises should further integrate green concepts into the entire process of trade activities, accelerate the use of digital technology, and comprehensively enhance their green and low-carbon development capabilities from multiple dimensions such as green production, green supply chain management, and product carbon footprint management. Digitalization empowers green production. Expand the typical application scenarios of "new generation information technology+green and low-carbon" throughout the entire process, and transform the concept of green and low-carbon into green products and services through digital technology. For example, in the product development and design process, establish a green and low-carbon basic database for the entire product lifecycle, develop a green development evaluation tool for the entire lifecycle, and focus on improving green design capabilities in product performance design, material development and selection, energy conservation and emission reduction, and pollution reduction design. In the production and manufacturing process, we will use 5G, industrial Internet, artificial intelligence and other technologies to promote the construction of green workshops and green factories, and actively develop customized, small batch flexible production capacity. In the logistics process, artificial intelligence algorithms can be used to plan the optimal transportation path and improve loading rates. In the after-sales process, fully utilize intelligent diagnostic tools to timely grasp and accurately analyze changes in demand, and enhance the supply capacity of products that meet international green standards and needs. Digitalization empowers green supply chain management. Digital technology provides a new solution for foreign trade enterprises to build transparent, collaborative, and efficient green supply chain management systems. For example, in order to flexibly respond to different countries' green standards, it is possible to explore the establishment of a green supply chain database, screen high-quality suppliers globally, and use digital tools to build a green access mechanism. Relying on energy management systems and clean production certification systems, drive upstream and downstream enterprises to complete production process transformation. Incorporate sustainable development into the supply chain evaluation system, establish a digital evaluation mechanism for green suppliers, and conduct precise profiling and classification management through continuous monitoring of multiple indicators such as supplier energy consumption, emissions, and resource utilization. Digitalization empowers carbon footprint management. By leveraging the digital transformation of the enterprise itself and its supply chain, carbon data from energy consumption, production processes, logistics transportation, and other links can be collected to establish a product lifecycle carbon footprint accounting system. For example, Zhejiang Province has taken the lead in building a carbon footprint database for the textile industry chain nationwide, forming a basic data support for the entire chain from cotton spinning, weaving, printing and dyeing to ready to wear, providing localized and highly reliable carbon accounting services for local foreign trade enterprises. Based on carbon footprint accounting, enterprises can further conduct carbon footprint analysis, identify key emission reduction links, optimize production processes, improve product design, and make adjustments to supply chain layout.
