The awarding ceremony for globally important agricultural cultural heritage, hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, was recently held in Rome, the capital of Italy. This event is one of the series of activities celebrating the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, which aims to hold a centralized awarding and exchange of globally recognized important agricultural cultural heritage sites since 2023. Representatives from governments, enterprises, and farmers from 14 countries and 28 agricultural cultural heritage sites participated in this event. Six Chinese heritage sites have been awarded by the Food and Agriculture Organization, namely the traditional chestnut cultivation system in Kuancheng, Hebei, the white ginger planting system in Tongling, Anhui, the compound breeding system of the ancient Yangmei group in Xianju, Zhejiang, the ancient pear orchard system in Shichuan, Gaolan, Gansu, the freshwater pearl compound breeding system in Deqing, Zhejiang, and the white tea culture system in Fuding, Fujian. As of now, there are a total of 102 important agricultural cultural heritage sites worldwide, of which China has 25, ranking first in the world in terms of quantity. In her video speech at the event, Qu Dongyu, Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization, stated that the traditional knowledge contained in important agricultural cultural heritage sites around the world has been enduring for a long time and its value is indispensable today. Local farmers have created sustainable ecological agricultural systems tailored to local conditions, providing practical experience for enhancing resilience to climate crises, ensuring food security, and improving farmers' livelihoods. On the day of the event, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations also held exhibitions showcasing globally important agricultural cultural heritage products, cultural exhibitions, and American food tastings. The Global Important Agricultural Cultural Heritage Protection Project was initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 2002, aiming to protect the unique land use systems, agricultural landscapes, biodiversity, and knowledge systems formed by the long-term co evolution and dynamic adaptation of rural areas and their environments, making them a model for sustainable agricultural development.
