Moderate supplementation to prevent cold and moisten dryness

2025-10-31

After the frost falls, coolness and dryness intertwine, and health preservation needs to balance cold prevention and moistening dryness, following the principle of "mild and moderate". There is a saying among the people that 'it's better to replenish winter than to replenish frost', and it's easier to absorb tonics at this time. Moderate intake of warm and nourishing foods such as lamb, beef, duck, chestnuts, etc. can enhance physical fitness. The key to "tonifying frost and descending" lies in the continuous flow of fine water. To avoid excessive cold and heat, lamb can be paired with Angelica sinensis and ginger to make soup, which can warm up and not dry or hot. If dry mouth and constipation occur, it is a signal of excessive supplementation. At this time, you can also eat more lilies, Tremella fuciformis, pears, honey, walnuts, etc., to relieve dryness of the nasopharynx and skin cracking. Avoid excessive consumption of cold foods, such as cold drinks or large amounts of watermelon. It is recommended to reduce the intake of spicy foods such as ginger, scallions, garlic, and chili to prevent worsening of autumn dryness. It is also advisable to increase the consumption of sour foods such as hawthorn, lemon, and vinegar to regulate lung qi. Carrots that have been frostbitten are clear and sweet, like pears. When eaten raw, they clear the lungs and reduce phlegm. When cooked, they invigorate the spleen and nourish qi. They are best stewed with pork ribs or chicken. Moderate consumption of persimmons can supplement vitamins, but they should not be eaten with seafood and should not be consumed on an empty stomach. The neck, waist, abdomen, and ankles are the most susceptible to invasion by cold pathogens. Wear a soft scarf, high waisted stockings, and soak your feet in 40 degree Celsius hot water for 20 minutes before bedtime to promote blood circulation and relieve dryness. Maintain appropriate indoor temperature and humidity to avoid respiratory diseases caused by dry or low temperature environments. In late autumn, getting close to nature can relieve depression. One should participate more in outdoor activities, such as enjoying autumn scenery, sunbathing, etc., to maintain a peaceful state of mind, nourish vitality, and avoid sadness and sorrow.
