Scam gangs target job seeking drivers to 'hire', deceive and 'pledge'

2025-10-30

Claiming to earn 1500 yuan per day, the logistics company directly hired the driver, but in reality deceived the driver into signing a lease contract and took the opportunity to create a breach of the contract, thereby embezzling the deposit. Recently, the Qingpu police in Shanghai cracked a huge contract fraud case of "routine car rental", broke up a fleeing fraud gang, and arrested 17 suspect. In mid September, the Qingpu Public Security Bureau received multiple driver reports of fraud. According to Mr. Wang, the informant, in the first half of this year, he was attracted by a high paying job offer from a logistics company while browsing job postings online. The company claimed that as long as he held a driver's license, he would be provided with a small truck by the company after joining, and a logistics hotline would be arranged nearby to ensure a monthly income of over 10000 yuan. Mr. Wang signed the contract offline and paid a monthly rent of 4500 yuan and a rental deposit of over 30000 yuan. Later, Mr. Wang found that the actual number of orders dispatched by the company was not only small, but also mostly from other provinces and cities, which did not match his previous promise. He demanded that the company refund the deposit, but the other party evaded it for various reasons and refused to refund the deposit on the grounds of Mr. Wang's breach of contract. After receiving the report, the Qingpu police immediately launched an investigation. Based on the clues provided by Mr. Wang, it was found that the logistics company did not have the large number of freight order channels mentioned by customer service, and there was suspicion of fraud. After further analysis and judgment, a criminal gang led by Li gradually surfaced. On October 21st, the police arrested 17 suspects including Li and Zhang who were suspected of fraud. After investigation, it was found that since 2023, the actual operator of the logistics company, Li, recruited Zhang, Ma and others to form a gang and posted false advertisements on online platforms, such as "low threshold and high salary recruitment of drivers, daily stable supply of goods, and local delivery of orders", inducing drivers to come and consult for job applications. When facing job applicants, they often use high income, stable supply of goods, and nearby delivery as gimmicks, and claim to the parties involved that they can earn more rewards by "contracting" rental company vehicles. The gang induced victims to sign so-called "car rental contracts" through layers of manipulation, and the previously promised "high income, stable supply, and nearby delivery" were not mentioned in the contracts. After the driver paid a deposit ranging from 20000 to 40000 yuan according to the contract, the gang did not provide nearby orders in the city. Instead, they forced the driver to "voluntarily breach the contract" by distributing long-distance and remote orders, and underpaid orders, in order to forcibly withhold the deposit for illegal profit. In order to evade regulatory crackdown from law enforcement agencies, the gang changed its office address and company name every few months within two years, and carried out fraud in multiple locations. As of the time of the incident, it has been verified that the amount involved exceeds 2.8 million yuan. Currently, 17 individuals including Li and Zhang have been criminally detained by the Qingpu police on suspicion of contract fraud, and the case is under further investigation. The police remind drivers to raise their awareness of risk prevention when applying for jobs, such as low entry requirements, high salaries, and promised sources of goods. Before signing the contract and paying the deposit, security deposit and other fees, it is necessary to carefully review the contract terms, clarify key information such as job content, income composition, and breach of contract liability, and verify the qualifications of the recruiting unit through various channels. Do not trust verbal promises. (New Society)
