Google announces restart of a nuclear power plant to power AI infrastructure

2025-10-29

On the 27th, Google announced a plan to restart a nuclear power plant in Iowa to power its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This indicates that American tech giants are expanding their channels for powering AI infrastructure. According to a joint press release by Google and New Era Energy, the two companies announced that the Duane Arnold Energy Center, which was closed in 2020, will resume operations in 2029 "to help meet Google's growing power needs for cloud and AI infrastructure in Iowa. Both parties have signed a 25 year electricity procurement agreement. The announcement also stated that as the United States enters a new era of AI driven innovation and opportunity, this strategic partnership aims to help Google responsibly meet its business growth needs. In addition to the recently announced cooperation plan, Google has also announced a partnership with the American company Elephante Energy to build three advanced nuclear power plants in the United States to ensure access to additional electricity supply. The rapid development of AI has made it one of the main sources of growth in global electricity demand. The International Energy Agency predicted in April this year that power consumption in data centers will more than double by 2030. (New Society)
