At the "Academic Seminar on Pre Qin Archaeology in Southwest Zhejiang, Northern Fujian, and Eastern Jiangxi" held in Yunhe County, Lishui City, Zhejiang Province on October 26th, it was learned that during the 14th Five Year Plan period, the systematic investigation results in the Southwest Zhejiang region were fruitful, filling many gaps in pre Qin archaeology in this area. Since 2021, with the support of the National Cutural Heritage Administration and the Zhejiang Provincial Bureau of Cultural Heritage, the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology, together with the municipal and county cultural relics departments in Lishui, has carried out a regional systematic survey in the hills and mountains in the southwest of Zhejiang where Lishui is located. Nearly 700 archaeological sites in the pre-qin period have been found, and a set of effective experience in field archaeological survey and excavation of mountain sites has been summarized. Zhao Hui, Director of the Neolithic Archaeology Professional Committee of the Chinese Archaeological Society and a first-class professor at Peking University, stated that previously, the archaeological community's understanding of the early history of southwestern Zhejiang was limited to a few sites of the Haochuan culture, and there have been shortcomings in the research on the distribution of settlements, social structure, cultural lineage, and other aspects of the local pre Qin period. Now, the cultural sequence of the pre Qin period has been preliminarily constructed in the southwestern region of Zhejiang, filling many gaps in pre Qin archaeology. The pottery pieces of the cross lake bridge culture, as well as fruit stones and rice samples were unearthed from the Mount Huangshan Upper Site in Yunhe County. Chen Minghui, a researcher at the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology who led the system investigation, said that according to carbon-14 dating, this site has a history of about 8000 years at its earliest. This survey has discovered over 300 Haochuan cultural sites, dating back 5000 to 4000 years. Among them, the Yunhe Xiansheng Bay site discovered the central settlement of the Haochuan Culture period, including more than 60 high-grade cemeteries, 2 house foundations, and 1 stone processing workshop. Among them, there are 5 large tombs with a scale of 22 to 30 square meters, with a large number and rich variety of burial objects. Zhao Hui said that this is an important example of the highly differentiated culture and society in Haochuan, indicating that a mountainous civilization model that was vastly different from the northern plains of Zhejiang had already formed in this region at that time. The Yunhe Dushan Tudun Tomb Site has discovered noble tombs from the Western Zhou Dynasty, and multiple sites have also discovered remains from the Neolithic period to the Western Zhou Dynasty. Zhao Hui said that these sites showcase the uniqueness of pre Qin archaeological culture in the hilly areas of southwestern Zhejiang, northern Fujian, and eastern Jiangxi, providing important new clues for archaeology in the southern Baiyue region.
