Cultivate the 'invisible farmland' of saving grain and reducing losses well

October 16th this year is the 45th World Food Day, and China is simultaneously launching the 2025 National Food Security Awareness Week, with the theme focusing on "Everyone's Responsibility for Food Conservation". Ensuring national food security is an eternal issue, and this string cannot be loosened at any time. Saving food is not only a virtue of diligence and frugality of the Chinese nation, but also an inevitable requirement for ensuring national food security and stabilizing Chinese rice bowls. Food security is a fundamental issue concerning human survival, and reducing food loss is an important way to ensure food security. At present, China's grain is still in a "tight balance" between supply and demand, which requires us to promote systematic optimization and efficiency improvement of grain conservation and loss reduction throughout the entire process. Reducing losses means increasing production. We need to cultivate not only the tangible farmland of 1.8 billion acres, but also the valuable intangible farmland of saving grain and reducing losses. From the fields to the dining table, the entire chain of grain saving and loss reduction provides a solid guarantee for stabilizing and securing Chinese rice bowls. This practice includes two key links: "grain saving" and "loss reduction". On the one hand, extensive promotion and education activities on food conservation are carried out to guide all members of society to consciously practice the behavioral norms of food conservation, elevating food conservation from a traditional virtue to the level of safeguarding national food security. For example, advocating a moderate, healthy, and rational consumption concept, guiding people to shift from pursuing abundance in "quantity" to emphasizing satisfaction in "quality", ordering food within their means in restaurants, choosing delivery orders accurately, taking less and more from buffet drinks frequently, avoiding "waste on the tongue" for the sake of "grandeur" and "face", restraining the endogenous impulse of vanity consumption, resisting the temptation of "excessive discounts" marketing strategies, and returning daily catering consumption to rational needs. The formation of a good social trend that advocates thrift cannot be separated from the promotion and education of strict thrift. Only by continuously carrying out publicity and education, and transforming the conservation of food into a conscious action of all citizens, can we provide profound and lasting support for food conservation. In recent years, various regions have widely carried out activities to cultivate the habit of thrift and establish a good trend. For example, the smart canteen of China Agricultural University uses AI recognition function to achieve contactless payment. During the process of teachers and students picking up food on trays, the screen displays the amount of food, dietary nutrition data and amount in real time. While effectively avoiding food waste, it facilitates teachers and students to scientifically regulate the food structure and ensure healthy and balanced nutrient intake. On the other hand, by using systematic thinking to break down barriers in each link, efforts should be made in the four key links of "precise harvesting", "scientific warehousing", "efficient logistics", and "moderate processing" to achieve synergistic efficiency in reducing grain losses. Build a dynamic monitoring system for crop maturity in the grain harvesting process, promote the updating and iteration of intelligent agricultural machinery and equipment, train and select specialized agricultural machinery operators, adopt low damage rate mechanized operations, and minimize field grain falling and crushing losses. According to statistics, the machine harvest loss rates of wheat, rice, and corn, the three major staple grains in China, in 2024 were 0.93%, 1.76%, and 2.06%, respectively, a decrease of 1 to 2 percentage points from 2021. Over the course of three years, a total of more than 50 billion kilograms of grain losses were reduced. Grain should not only be 'planted well', but also 'stored well'. Scientific warehousing requires strengthening technological empowerment, promoting and popularizing the "four in one" grain storage technology, while strengthening the construction of circulation fumigation systems, intelligent ventilation systems, and intelligent warehousing management systems to suppress the deterioration of grain quality. For example, a company has explored a "smart grain management" solution that integrates intelligent ventilation, nitrogen gas regulation, intelligent temperature control, and grain situation measurement and control systems, promoting the iterative upgrading of grain storage technology in high humidity environments, achieving a 100% coverage rate of green grain storage technology, and reducing the comprehensive storage loss rate of grain to around 0.12%. In the process of grain transportation and processing, big data and the Internet of Things should be used to build a grain monitoring and early warning system, develop bulk grain transportation and standardized container transportation, avoid losses such as spills and spoilage, integrate multi-source data such as grain depot monitoring, quality traceability, logistics scheduling, etc., and achieve intelligent digital supervision. Advanced processing technology is the key to saving grain and reducing losses. Moderate processing "refers to the development and implementation of reasonable processing standards to guide enterprises to improve processes, promote the recycling of by-products, reduce losses through innovative models, enhance efficiency through green transformation, preserve the nutritional value of food, and improve resource utilization.
