In the midst of autumn in Serbia in October, a brand new high-speed train stops at the central railway station in the capital city of Belgrade. The electronic screen shows that the final destination is the border town of Subotica. This is the first passenger dedicated train to be launched after the full opening of the Serbia section of the Hungary Serbia Railway. Local residents step into the carriages to experience a brand new journey and feel the "Chinese speed" of the train together. The Hungary Serbia railway connecting Belgrade and Budapest, the capital of Hungary, has a total length of 341.7 kilometers, with a Serbian section of 183.1 kilometers long and a designed maximum speed of 200 kilometers per hour. It is a flagship project of cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European countries. Most of the project sections are financed by the Export Import Bank of China, led by China Railway International Limited, and jointly established with China Communications Construction Corporation to form a Chinese joint venture for construction. At noon, the train officially departs. After a brief acceleration, the electronic display screen inside the carriage indicated that the train was starting to travel at a maximum speed of 200 kilometers per hour. Many passengers took out their phones and took photos with their friends in front of the electronic display screen. Passenger Dragan told reporters, "This railway connects Serbian cities in an efficient way, which is an important symbol of our country's modernization. Serbia's ability to have such a high-speed railway proves that the country is progressing and developing." Another passenger, Alexander, told reporters, "The high-speed train is completely different from the old trains. The carriages are very smooth, and the coffee cups on the small table do not shake. The speed is unbelievably fast, but the interior is very quiet. We believe that in the future, high-speed trains will become the preferred way for more and more people to travel." Recently, Serbian President Vucic personally experienced the trial run train to Subotica. He stated that previously it took nearly 5 hours for the train to travel from Belgrade to Subotica, but this train only takes a little over an hour to arrive. He sighed and said, "Without our Chinese friends, we would not have achieved such great success." The Serbia section of the Hungary Serbia Railway adopts a train control system independently developed by China Railway, introducing domestically produced communication signals, power and electrification, steel rails, turnouts, bridge steel structures and other equipment, and tailoring the high-speed trains of the Hungary Serbia Railway. As the first high-speed railway from China to enter Europe, the Hungary Serbia Railway has also become the first project for Chinese railway technology and equipment to pass the EU Railway Interconnection Technical Specification certification. In March 2022, the Belgrade Novi Sad section (Beno section) of the Hungary Serbia Railway in Serbia was put into operation, ushering in a new era of high-speed railways in the Balkans. After the opening of the Beno section, the travel time between the two places has been reduced from over 90 minutes to about 30 minutes, with an average of 62 passenger trains running daily. As of now, more than 12.6 million passengers have been sent, which has been highly praised by the Serbian government and people. Alexander Adamovic, Acting Director of the Serbian Railway Administration, stated that the construction of the Hungary Serbia Railway was completed to a high standard, bringing convenience to the lives of residents along the route and constantly changing the face of the country's development. At 13:22, the train arrived at Subotica Station and passengers got off one after another. Looking into the distance from Subotica Station, the railway tracks continue to extend to the border between Serbia and Hungary, and the Hungarian section of the Hungary Serbia railway is under construction. Hungary's Deputy Minister of Construction and Transport, Chepraig Nando, stated that the Hungarian section of the Hungary Serbia Railway will be put into operation next spring, and at that time, this railway will fully unleash its potential, bringing more opportunities for the economic development of Hungary and Serbia as well as the region.
