Rapid detection of pesticide residues in food using quantum dot microsphere test strips

2025-10-20

The team members from the School of Food Science at Nanchang University used quantum dot microsphere test strips for detection. 【 Achievement Report 】 A test strip can make pesticide residues in chili peppers "nowhere to hide" in 5 to 10 minutes... Recently, reporters saw in the laboratory of the School of Food Science at Nanchang University that this efficient detection technology is simplifying the cumbersome food safety analysis process of the past. Nowadays, this technology has been quietly applied in agricultural markets and supermarkets in Jiangxi and many other parts of the country, changing the grassroots food safety prevention and control mode in China. Behind this is the technical breakthrough of the "Spring Blossoms and Autumn Harvest" food safety rapid testing team at the School of Food Science, Nanchang University, which has been working for many years. They successfully condensed the precision testing instruments in the laboratory into a thin and light test strip, achieving rapid detection of pesticide residues in food. We study whatever the country needs. ”Xiong Yonghua, a researcher at the School of Food Science at Nanchang University, said that as early as 2002, faced with the almost blank situation of rapid food safety testing technology in China, the team resolutely chose to face the challenge and successfully developed the first commercialized "clenbuterol hydrochloride colloidal gold test strip" in China. The test strip is like a sharp sword, pointing directly at the problem of the proliferation of 'lean meat powder' at that time. ”Xiong Yonghua said that colloidal gold test strips are easy to operate and cost-effective, making important contributions to the establishment of China's food safety rapid inspection system. However, with the continuous improvement of national food safety limit standards, the limitations of traditional colloidal gold test strips have gradually become apparent. The sensitivity cannot keep up, resulting in some trace pollutants being difficult to detect; relying on human eyes to read colors is subjective and cannot be quantified, "Xiong Yonghua said frankly." What the country expects is more accurate, reliable, and transparent detection technology, so that the people can buy clearly and eat with peace of mind. "The bottleneck of technology is precisely the starting point for breakthrough. In 2012, the team turned their attention to the cutting-edge quantum dot fluorescence microsphere immunoassay technology in China at that time. What is the impact of quantum dot fluorescent microspheres on the sensitivity of detection? How to achieve quantitative detection? What is the fundamental theoretical basis behind it? How to ensure the accuracy of detection in industrial applications... After determining the research direction, a series of challenges are presented to the team. After ten years of research and development, the above difficulties have been successfully solved by the team. What is quantum dot fluorescent microsphere? It can be imagined as a 'super fluorescent sphere', "explained Huang Xiaolin, a researcher at the School of Food Science and Technology at Nanchang University." It wraps thousands of quantum dots together, with a luminescence intensity far exceeding that of traditional materials, increasing the overall detection sensitivity by 3 to 10 times. "With its help, harmful substances that were previously difficult to capture are now nowhere to hide. Moreover, this technology has achieved a leap from qualitative to quantitative. The photon signals emitted by quantum dots have strong anti-interference ability and can be accurately quantified even in complex food matrices. This breakthrough has shifted food safety regulation from "passive detection" to "active prevention and control". The new technology has greatly simplified the processing flow. This allows farmers' markets and supermarkets to conduct professional level inspections anytime and anywhere, making "fast inspections" truly fast. At present, the team has successfully developed more than 100 detection products covering four major series of pesticide residues, veterinary drug residues, fungal toxins, and prohibited additives, basically covering various high-risk projects in edible agricultural products, and building a solid technical defense line for food safety in China. Our annual supply of products has reached 500000 pieces, covering over 90% of the market regulatory needs in Jiangxi Province. ”The chairman of the company, Liu Wenjuan, said. In 2020, the team initiated a strategic cooperation with Jiangxi Weibang Biotechnology Co., Ltd., bridging the "last mile" from laboratory to industrialization. In 2025, the two sides will deepen cooperation again and jointly establish Jiangxi Weibang Tongchuang Biotechnology Co., Ltd., realizing the comprehensive transformation of core patented technologies and building a closed loop of the entire industry chain from research and development, production to market application. Nowadays, this achievement has been verified by metrology and quality testing research institutes in Nanjing, Shenzhen, Ningbo and other cities, and is gradually being piloted and applied. At the same time, the Collaborative Innovation Center for Food Safety Testing has officially landed in Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province. (New Society)
