According to the Ningbo Cultural Heritage Management Research Institute in Zhejiang Province on the 16th, a salvage archaeological excavation was completed in Guotang'ao, Cicheng. A well preserved and structurally clear Eastern Han Dynasty dragon kiln was rediscovered after two thousand years of dust accumulation. This dragon kiln, which has been dormant for two thousand years, not only showcases the superb level of Han Dynasty porcelain industry with its complete structure, but also reveals the complexity and diversity of Zhejiang celadon system through the simultaneous firing of blue glazed and black glazed porcelain in the same kiln. ”The archaeological leader of the project, Wang Guangyuan, said. The Guotangao kiln site is located in Bazi Administrative Village, Cicheng Town, Jiangbei District, Ningbo City. It is situated on the southern foothills of the Changxi Mountain Range and on the eastern bank of the Guotang River. In the late 1970s, the cultural relics department discovered multiple kiln sites from the Han and Six Dynasties periods in this area. In the 1980s, the Guotangao kiln site was officially listed as a municipal level cultural relic protection unit in Ningbo. With the promotion of the construction of Tongsu Jiayong Railway, in order to protect the underground cultural relics, from May to July 2025, with the approval of the National Cutural Heritage Administration of China, Ningbo Institute of Cultural Heritage Management will carry out rescue archaeological excavation on the kiln site. Wang Guangyuan stated that the most dazzling achievement of this excavation is the clearing of a 22.5 meter long Eastern Han Dynasty dragon kiln. Dragon kiln, as a common kiln form in ancient southern China, is named after its mountainous terrain and winding dragon like shape. Guotang'aolong Kiln consists of three parts: the firing chamber, kiln bed, and kiln tail, and belongs to a typical three-stage structure. At the kiln head, auxiliary facilities such as operating surfaces, pillar holes, and drainage ditches were also found, which reproduced the scene of kiln firing at that time, "said Wang Guangyuan. A batch of kiln furniture and porcelain specimens were unearthed during archaeological excavations, revealing the style of the Eastern Han porcelain industry. For example, it was previously believed that the kilns that also fired black glazed porcelain during the Eastern Han Dynasty were mainly concentrated in Deqing kilns (Huzhou area) and early Yue kilns in Shangyu. The black glazed porcelain products unearthed from the Guotang'ao kiln site indicate that as early as the Eastern Han Dynasty, the black glazed firing technology had already been mastered in the core area of the Yue kiln in Cicheng, Ningbo. This discovery expands the scope of society's understanding of the origin and development of black glazed porcelain, providing a new perspective and direction for in-depth research on the origin and development of black glazed porcelain.
