Zhejiang University Art and Archaeology Museum: Cultural Relics Warehouse Becomes Second Classroom
2025-10-16
In front of the exhibition cabinet of the "Chinese Painting Department of Various Dynasties" at the Zhejiang University Art and Archaeology Museum (hereinafter referred to as the "Art Museum"), following the explanation of the main lecturer Jin Xiaoming in the course of "Chinese Civilization in Various Dynasties Painting", students can lean down to observe and appreciate the brush and ink patterns of Yuan Dynasty paintings; Or you can use your hands to access the details of the local texturing method of the painting in the interactive screen; Or explore the expression methods of landscape space through color alternation and transformation. Traditional classroom lectures only involve a few works at most, and students can only watch them on the screen, which greatly reduces the effectiveness. ”Jin Xiaoming shared the original intention of the research group's design of "Chinese Civilization in Historical Painting": students can "wander" through hundreds or even nearly a thousand works, stimulate their senses, and have a more genuine and profound understanding of cultural relics. Since its launch in 2005, the "Chinese Historical Painting Series" project has collected 12405 sets of Chinese painting collections from 263 cultural and museum institutions at home and abroad, including 9155 sets domestically and 3250 sets overseas. The Zhejiang University team also published a total of 60 volumes and 226 volumes of art collections from the pre Qin, Han, Tang, Ming, and Qing dynasties based on this. History and culture are recorded both in writing and in physical objects, and both are indispensable. ”Lu Ping, the deputy director of the Art Museum, said that the museum regularly updates its exhibits based on topics such as "Yuan painting" and "Song painting", and turns the exhibition hall into an exclusive classroom, achieving "constant exhibitions and updates". In addition to general education courses, professional teaching maximizes the utilization of museum resources. The art museum has opened its cultural relic storage room to students majoring in related fields, making it a second classroom. The major of cultural relics and museums is a highly applied discipline. While it is important to introduce museum collection knowledge in the form of graphics and visual aids in the classroom, it is even more indispensable to lead students to personally organize teaching collections and participate in collection management work in the art museum warehouse through real-life teaching. "Mao Ruohan, the teacher of the" Museum Collection "course, stated the core value of the course: the course is based on real work scenarios, so that professional teaching is no longer just theoretical, and talents with both theoretical literacy and practical abilities are cultivated for the cultural and museum fields. Driven by such goals and visions, in the spring semester of 2024, the Art Museum and the Department of Culture and Archaeology of the School of Art and Archaeology will jointly offer courses for third year undergraduate students majoring in culture and archaeology, creating a dual track curriculum system of "theory+real-life". In the former "no entry for idle people" warehouse, students follow senior librarians to manage collections, register and catalog them, and personally organize teaching collections such as bronze ware, calligraphy and painting, deepening their understanding of the profession through practical operations. Currently, more and more students are actively joining the volunteer work of art museums. Cao Junxiang, a 2022 undergraduate student majoring in literature and humanities, participated in the presentation of the Yuan Painting Special Exhibition, which presented the literati's emotions in eight sections from multiple dimensions. Through modern technological means such as digitization, artificial intelligence, and metaverse, the forms of existence, expression methods, and dissemination carriers of excellent traditional Chinese culture continue to innovate. Through deep participation, Cao Junxiang's insights have become even more profound. Cultural inheritance and innovation are important missions of universities, and the core mission of the Art Museum is to serve the teaching and research of Zhejiang University, satisfying the general and professional education of the university through physical teaching. ”Curator Liu Bin frankly stated, "Museums are not only places to showcase history and culture, but also bridges between the past, present, and future, with the mission of serving the public." Adhering to the concept of openness and sharing, the Art Museum extends its service scope from teachers and students on campus to the general public. The Art Museum has created three major brand education projects: "Beauty of Intangible Cultural Heritage", "Experimental Workshop", and "Art Museum Experience Workshop". In addition to knowledge dissemination, the public can personally experience the production of rubbings, draw bronze patterns, and feel the charm of traditional calligraphy and painting. In addition, the art museum also combines public education activities with important milestones such as school anniversary, International Museum Day, and Cultural Heritage Day, to bring cultural resources hidden deep inside the campus to life and go global. At present, the Art Museum has received donations to establish more than 10 special funds to support core work such as collection, exhibition, education, research, and volunteer cultivation; Received donations of nearly a hundred collections and teaching samples, including various types of cultural relics and artworks such as calligraphy and painting, bronze ware, porcelain, lacquerware, furniture, etc. Since its opening in 2019, the art museum has received 1.18 million visitors.
