National Library Documentary Screening Season Holds Multiple Masterpieces to Salute the Birth of Films

2025-10-16

In 1895, the Lumi è re brothers, French photographers, invented the "motion picture projector", which shot a series of documentary short films and screened them at a coffee shop in Paris, marking the official birth of film. 130 years later, in tribute to the birth of film art, the 2025 National Library Documentary Screening Season has officially launched. At the opening ceremony of the event, the documentary "Charlie Chaplin: The Wandering Heart" directed by Carmen Chaplin, granddaughter of renowned film director and actor Charlie Chaplin, was presented to the audience. Through exclusive interviews, family footage, and movie clips, the film presents a more three-dimensional image of Charlie Chaplin to the audience with many undisclosed images and intimate memories of his family. After the screening, the on-site guests and Carmen Chaplin shared and exchanged ideas with the audience. They combined Charlie Chaplin's classic works to introduce his position in the history of world cinema. Carmen Chaplin also shared with the audience the emotional journey of film creation. Huo Ruijuan, Deputy Director of the National Library, stated that the National Library is the main repository of national literature and information resources, fulfilling the responsibilities of collecting and protecting literature. As a precious documentary audiovisual document, documentaries are of great significance for libraries to enrich their collection resources and fulfill their social education functions. Since the launch of the Chinese Memory Project in 2012, the National Library of China has collected 286 documentaries and 544 videos. Through the exhibition of excellent documentaries, the National Library of China is continuously expanding the boundaries of library social education and better implementing the purpose of "inheriting civilization and serving society". Zhang Tongdao, a professor at the School of Arts and Media of Beijing Normal University and director of the Documentary Center, stated that documentaries are a form of public cultural dissemination that fully aligns with the characteristics of libraries. John Grierson, as the creator of the term documentary, proposed early on to develop documentaries in the library system and put them into practice. Nowadays, images have become a new type of literature after text and images, and are the future "archives" and "books" of libraries. In this documentary exhibition season of the National Library, 12 excellent documentaries at home and abroad, including Chaplin: The Heart of Vagrancy, The Great Buster, The Last Mountain God, White Horse sisters, Southern Overseas Chinese Machinists and Centennial Masters, were screened in succession. Four of them are biographical works of important filmmakers in the world of film, paying tribute to the art of cinema by reviewing their past. The rest of the films cover diverse themes such as humanistic documentary and historical heritage, bringing audiences a rich feast of documentary films. It is reported that this screening season will last until late November. (New Society)
