The world has reached the first climate tipping point

2025-10-16

According to the Global Critical Point Report jointly written and released by 160 scientists from 87 institutions in 23 countries, the world has reached the first climate critical point. The report states that as global warming exceeds the critical threshold of 1.5 ℃, the world is rapidly approaching a series of catastrophic tipping points, with the large-scale death of warm water coral reefs becoming the first significant sign. This means that humanity has entered a completely new 'climate reality', where the stability of multiple critical systems on Earth is facing unprecedented threats. The report warns that global temperatures have risen by about 1.4 ℃, and the estimated center of the thermal critical point for warm water coral reefs is 1.2 ℃, ranging from 1 ℃ to 1.5 ℃, indicating that they have substantially crossed an irreversible critical point. Even if the temperature rise can be controlled within 1.5 ℃, coral reefs are almost certain (with a probability of over 99%) to disappear on a large scale. And this ecosystem supports the livelihoods of nearly 1 billion people and a quarter of marine biodiversity. Meanwhile, people are standing on the edge of more critical points: irreversible melting of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets will lead to long-term sea level rise; Due to the dual pressures of climate change and deforestation, the Amazon rainforest may begin to die on a large scale when temperatures reach 1.5 ℃, affecting over 100 million people who rely on its resources; The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation is at risk of collapsing when the temperature rises below 2 ℃, which will disrupt global climate patterns, leading to colder winters in Northwest Europe, weakened monsoons in West Africa and India, and threatening global agricultural production and food security. Once these systems cross a critical point, their changes will be sudden, drastic, and irreversible, and the current international governance system and climate agreements are not adequately prepared for such risks. In the face of this urgent situation, the report emphasizes that the key to avoiding the most serious consequences is to take unprecedented emergency action immediately. Every degree of warming and every year of staying in a high temperature state will significantly increase the risk of triggering more critical points. Therefore, emissions reduction must be accelerated while expanding the scale of sustainable carbon dioxide removal to achieve rapid cooling. The report also proposes a hopeful way out: by triggering a 'positive tipping point', promoting the self strengthening transformation of the socio technical system. In recent years, the popularization of green technologies such as solar energy, wind energy, electric vehicles, battery energy storage, and heat pumps has shown positive signs. This transformation is not limited to the energy sector. In interconnected systems such as agriculture, transportation, urban and forest management, if coordinated policies can be implemented, it can trigger a chain of positive changes. In addition, the shift in social attitudes is also accelerating: public concerns about the climate crisis continue to rise, and the actions of a few pioneers are enough to drive behavior change among a wider group. The restoration of ecosystems and the promotion of sustainable consumption patterns can also trigger a positive feedback loop between natural and social systems. Dr. Mike Barrett, Chief Scientific Advisor of the World Wildlife Fund UK, stated that the collapse of warm water coral reefs is a warning bell, and if decisive action is not taken immediately, the loss of the Amazon, ice sheets, and ocean currents will have truly catastrophic global consequences. However, the solution is still within reach. Countries must demonstrate political courage to drive change in a fair and inclusive manner, ensuring that the transition process benefits everyone.
