This year marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of agricultural extension services in South Africa. At the recently held first Agricultural Extension Week in South Africa and the 58th Annual Meeting of the South African Agricultural Extension Association, Minister of Agriculture Sting Hesse stated that agriculture plays an important role in the South African economy, and the modernization process of agriculture is related to the livelihoods of many farmers. The South African government has always been committed to placing agricultural technology promotion at the core of inclusive rural development, food security, and knowledge and technology transfer. Providing practical and personalized advice to farmers to help them increase yields, promote sustainable planting patterns, avoid risks, and expand markets is of great significance, especially for small farmers who rely on technical guidance and policy support, "said Stinheisen. The theme of this conference is "Leveraging Innovation and Technology to Enhance Agricultural Extension and Consulting Services, Develop Sustainable Agriculture, Improve Livelihoods, and Ensure Food Security". The aim is to promote communication, cooperation, and knowledge sharing between technology extension personnel and agricultural practitioners to advance sustainable agricultural development in South Africa. In recent years, South Africa has accelerated the digital transformation of agriculture, with drones, remote sensing technology, and intelligent irrigation systems widely used in agriculture. According to data from market research firm Allison, the average annual growth rate of the small drone market in South Africa from 2020 to 2025 is 22.35%, and it is expected that the market size will reach $138 million by 2025. In terms of agricultural technology talent construction, South Africa has launched the "Farmer Field School" project with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. It plans to add 260 assistant agricultural technicians by 2025 to provide technical guidance to farmers and help them apply advanced technology to practical production. The cooperation between South Africa and China in the field of agricultural technology continues to deepen, and Chinese agricultural technology provides support for the green development of South Africa's agriculture. In the sugarcane planting area of KwaZulu Natal province, local farmers use drones produced by China's Jifei Technology for operations. During manual operation, it takes 30 people a day to complete the spraying task on 40 hectares of farmland; The maximum daily operational capacity of a single drone can reach 170 hectares. Through precise spraying, the sugarcane stem borer disaster has been effectively controlled. Chinese drone technology has freed us from inefficient manual spraying methods, "said Deon Bugel, the agricultural manager of Fangting Hill Manor, which is also a common feeling among local farmers. In Limpopo Province, the agricultural technology cooperation between China and South Africa is still advancing to a deeper level. In September 2024, the China Africa Beidou Satellite Navigation System and Remote Sensing Application Joint Laboratory was officially launched; In October of the same year, the first data receiving station was installed and put into operation at Wenda University Farm. The Beidou system is not only an upgrade of equipment, but also helps South African agriculture access the global digital agriculture network, "said Kutama, the manager of the Wenda University experimental farm. The system will provide all-weather technical support for precision planting and disaster warning in agriculture, helping South African agriculture better integrate into global digital development. Chinese agricultural technology has provided assistance for the modernization of South African agriculture through localized practice. Lao Mokop, an official from the agricultural department of Gauteng Province, said that the challenges facing global food security are constantly increasing. The achievements made by South China in agricultural technology cooperation provide useful references for other developing countries to promote sustainable agricultural development. (New Society)
