2025-10-13

The 22nd Annual Meeting of the Chinese Archaeological Society opened on the 12th in Yinchuan, Ningxia. The reporter learned from the meeting that archaeological work in Ningxia has made breakthrough progress, establishing for the first time a complete sequence of archaeological and cultural development from the early Yangshao period to the Qijia culture in the Neolithic Age. Multiple important discoveries have filled the regional archaeological gap. According to Yang Jian, deputy curator of the Ningxia Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, the archaeological team conducted systematic investigations in a wide range of areas including the Huluhe River Basin, Nanhuashan area, Luoshan area, Qingshui River Basin, and Honghe River Basin, and focused on excavating the Longde Shatang Beiyuan Site and Zhoujiazuitou Site. Through continuous efforts, a complete cultural development sequence of "Early Yangshao Middle Yangshao Late Yangshao Majiayao Culture Caiyuan Culture Shatang Beiyuan Type Qijia Culture" has been established. Among them, the excavation results of the Shatang Beiyuan site are particularly remarkable. The archaeological team discovered and named a new archaeological cultural relic - the "Shatang North Plateau Type", effectively connecting the key gap between the vegetable garden culture and the Qijia culture in the region, filling an important gap in archaeological research during the Longshan period. The excavation of the Zhoujiazuitou site has created the history of archaeology in Ningxia - for the first time, early and middle period relics of the Yangshao culture have been discovered in Ningxia, and large-scale pottery kiln sites from the late Yangshao period have been exposed, providing valuable physical materials for studying the handicraft technology and development level of the Yangshao period in the northwest region. This archaeological work deeply integrates interdisciplinary collaboration and has achieved fruitful results in fields such as chronology, paleoenvironmental restoration, animal and plant archaeology, and paleoanthropology. At the same time, the archaeological team promptly systematically organized the investigation and excavation data, and achieved significant results. These significant discoveries not only reshape people's understanding of prehistoric culture in Ningxia, but also provide a new perspective for understanding the evolution of ancient societies in the entire northwest region. ”Ma Qiang, a research curator at the Ningxia Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, said.
