Clear roadmap for the brain computer interface industry

The National Medical Products Administration recently approved the release of the industry standard "Terminology for Medical Devices Using Brain Computer Interface Technology", which will be officially implemented on January 1 next year. This is the first brain computer interface medical device standard in China. Previously, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and seven other departments issued the "Implementation Opinions on Promoting Innovative Development of the Brain Computer Interface Industry" (hereinafter referred to as the "Opinions"), proposing that by 2030, the innovation capability of the brain computer interface industry should be significantly improved, a safe and reliable industrial system should be formed, 2 to 3 globally influential leading enterprises and a group of specialized, refined, and new small and medium-sized enterprises should be cultivated, and an internationally competitive industrial ecosystem should be built, with comprehensive strength entering the forefront of the world. With the introduction of various policies, the development of the brain computer interface industry is becoming increasingly standardized and systematic. Brain computer interface (BCI) is a cutting-edge technology that integrates life sciences and information sciences by establishing information channels between the brain and machines, enabling collaborative interaction between biological intelligence and machine intelligence. In recent years, with the continuous emergence of innovative achievements, the brain computer interface industry has accelerated its growth. Public data shows that the market size of China's brain computer interface will reach 3.2 billion yuan in 2024, and is expected to reach 6.14 billion yuan by 2028. Ao Li, Chief Engineer of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, believes that the issuance of the "Opinions" is a crucial step for China to move from "following" to "running parallel" and even "leading" in the field of brain computer interfaces, providing strategic support for addressing population aging, enhancing national security capabilities, and cultivating new quality productivity. The Opinion clarifies six key tasks, including strengthening the research and development of basic software and hardware, creating high-performance products, promoting the application of technological achievements, strengthening innovation entities, enhancing industrial support capabilities, and implementing safeguard measures. It is further refined into 17 specific measures, forming a complete and systematic system for promoting industrial development. Experts say that this will promote the improvement of the brain computer interface industry ecosystem, enhance international competitiveness, and promote the landing of applications in multiple fields, which will benefit the well-being of the people. At present, brain computer interfaces are mainly applied in fields such as medical health, industrial manufacturing, and consumer life. ”Yu Yuntao, Technical Director of China Electronics Standardization Institute, introduced that "with the cross integration and innovative application of emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, bio digital, and augmented reality, the development prospects of brain computer interface technology and industry will be very broad." "The medical and health field is the main application direction of brain computer interface. ”Ao Li told reporters. In the medical field, brain computer interfaces can be used for the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of neurological related diseases such as epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease; In the field of industrial manufacturing, more precise control of industrial robots can be achieved to improve production efficiency and safety in key industries such as hazardous materials, nuclear energy, mining, and electricity; In the field of daily consumption, the continuous development of brain controlled home appliances, brain controlled computers and other products will effectively enhance the convenience and intelligent experience of life. A group of innovative enterprises focusing on the research and application of brain computer interface technology have emerged in China, forming a relatively complete industrial chain. Some products have become relatively mature and are now being applied. Several domestic enterprises have obtained medical device registration certificates for brain computer interface exercise rehabilitation equipment, which is used for rehabilitation training of stroke patients and has achieved good therapeutic effects. Currently, the global brain computer interface industry still faces challenges in terms of technology, industry ecology, and ethics. Ao Li introduced that from a technical perspective, the accuracy and stability of brain signals, neural decoding algorithms, and biocompatibility of implanted electrodes need to be further improved; From the perspective of industrial ecology, the current industrial development is still in its early stages, and the overall strength of various links in the industrial chain is not strong; From an ethical and security perspective, the ethical controversies brought about by privacy issues, as well as the compliance management and application of data, still need to be taken seriously. To promote the further development of the brain computer interface industry, Ao Li suggests that on the one hand, the government, enterprises, and research institutions should increase funding support for the research and development of brain computer interface technology, especially in key core technologies such as brain signal sensing components and brain computer chips, and encourage cross disciplinary joint research and development projects; On the other hand, it is necessary to strengthen the training of professionals in relevant disciplines and encourage universities and enterprises to jointly cultivate interdisciplinary and composite talents. In addition, we should actively explore new application scenarios such as education and entertainment, tap into market demand, and promote product innovation and iteration. Standards are crucial for industrial development, and strengthening the guidance of standards will effectively enhance the support capabilities of the brain computer interface industry. The Opinion proposes to establish a standard system for brain computer interface technology and lay out a roadmap for standardized development. Yu Yuntao believes that all departments should organize the formulation of technical standards, product standards, service standards, and testing standards according to their responsibilities, accelerate the research and development of key standards based on industrial development needs, actively participate in international standard formulation, and vigorously promote the "going global" of Chinese standards. We need to strengthen departmental collaboration, coordinate and promote technological breakthroughs, industrial development, industry applications, security governance, and other related work; Deepen cooperation between the central and local governments, optimize industrial layout, and encourage localities to promote technological innovation and industrial development according to local conditions; By promoting the implementation of a number of major projects and strengthening the collaborative research and development capabilities of industry, academia, and research; At the same time, we will guide industry funds and social capital to increase investment, provide registration guidance and support for key products, make good use of policies such as the first unit (set) and the first batch of insurance compensation, and accelerate the implementation of industrialization. ”Yu Yuntao suggested.
