In 2011, the Sri Lankan government printed a panoramic image of the power station on a 100 rupee banknote. Since its commissioning, the Putram coal-fired power plant has accounted for nearly 40% of the country's total electricity consumption over the years, greatly alleviating Sri Lanka's electricity shortage.
