Putram coal-fired power plant: lighting up thousands of lights in Sri Lanka

2025-10-07

On the streets of Sri Lanka, when reporters took out a local 100 rupee banknote and pointed to the magnificent industrial building pattern on the back to ask passersby if they knew the country that built it, the answer they received was almost unanimous: "China! ”The Putram coal-fired power plant, featuring a 100 rupee banknote with the same design, is constructed by China Machinery Engineering Corporation. This coal-fired power plant has set multiple "historical records" in Sri Lanka: the country's first coal-fired power plant, the largest coal-fired power plant in terms of power generation, and also the largest technology and trade cooperation project between China and Sri Lanka to date. In 2011, the Sri Lankan government printed a panoramic image of the power station on a 100 rupee banknote. Since its commissioning, the Putram coal-fired power plant has accounted for nearly 40% of the country's total electricity consumption over the years, greatly alleviating Sri Lanka's electricity shortage. Samantha Jayatillak, a power station engineer, said, "This is the largest power station in the country and holds great significance for us. We are grateful for the support of the Chinese government. I am willing to dedicate my life time to the power station and make some contributions to the local community. The image of the power station is printed on a 100 rupee coin, meaning that everyone can see and use it. This moment reminds us of the value of this job." Local resident Menaka Vidagama said, "The power station provides employment opportunities for many people and effectively improves their living standards. The power station also provides us with sufficient electricity supply, and electricity bills are gradually decreasing. The image of the power station is printed on paper money, which makes us very proud. This power station has brought us tangible benefits
