Blantyre News: Malawi's elected President Mutharika was sworn in on the 4th in the economic capital Blantyre, starting a 5-year term. In his inaugural speech, Mutharika called on the people of the country to unite, transcend differences, and jointly promote national progress. He stated that he will return with a new vision and agenda to fulfill the promise of 'change'. Mutharika said, "We must work together to build a prosperous Malawi." Mutharika's running mate Jane Ansa was sworn in as the Vice President of Malawi on the same day. Malawi held its "three in one" presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections on September 16th. On the 24th of the same month, the Malawi Election Commission announced the results of the presidential election, with former President and leader of the Democratic Progressive Party, Mutharika, receiving over 3 million votes and a vote share of 56.8%. According to the Malawi Constitution, a candidate who obtains a majority of votes in the first round of voting wins the election. Mutharika, aged 85, was first elected president in 2014 and successfully re elected in 2019. In February 2020, the Malawi Constitutional Court ruled that the results of the 2019 presidential election were invalid and demanded a new election to be held within 150 days. Mutharika was defeated in the re held elections. Malawi is located in southeastern Africa, with an area of less than 120000 square kilometers, and is one of the least developed countries in the world. (New Society)
