Chinese researchers propose a new interface control scheme for solid-state lithium batteries

The reporter learned from the Institute of Metals of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the research team of the Institute has recently made breakthroughs in the field of solid state lithium batteries, providing a new path to solve the key problems of high interface impedance and low ion transmission efficiency of solid state batteries. The research results have been recently published in the international academic journal Advanced Materials. Solid state lithium batteries are considered an important development direction for the next generation of energy storage technology due to their high safety and energy density. However, the poor solid solid interface contact between the electrode and electrolyte in traditional solid-state batteries leads to high ion transport resistance and low efficiency, which seriously restricts their practical applications. The research team utilized the design flexibility of polymer molecules to simultaneously introduce ion conducting ethoxy groups and electrochemically active short sulfur chains on the main chain, preparing a new type of material that achieves interface integration at the molecular scale. This material not only has high ion transport capability, but also can achieve controllable switching between ion transport and storage behavior in different potential ranges. According to researchers, the integrated flexible battery constructed based on this material exhibits excellent bending resistance and can withstand 20000 repeated bending cycles. When used as a polymer electrolyte in the composite positive electrode, the energy density of the composite positive electrode is increased by 86%. This study provides new material design ideas and research paradigms for the development of high-performance and high safety solid-state batteries. (New Society)
