Hunan Agricultural University: Writing Music and Ideological and Political Courses with the Spirit of Scientists

2025-09-30

"I have a dream, buried in the soil and convinced that it is different, light gives it hope, rain gives it nourishment, and it grows with the seeds..." At Hunan Agricultural University, a fresh ideological and political lesson began with the song "I Have a Dream" written by Yuan Longping, the father of hybrid rice, an academician of the CAE Member, and the winner of the "Medal of the Republic". Yuan Longping had a deep connection with Hunan Agricultural University before his death, serving as honorary president, doctoral supervisor, and double appointed academician of Hunan Agricultural University. In September 2019, when attending the opening ceremony for undergraduate students at Hunan Agricultural University, he gave the eight character motto of "knowledge, sweat, inspiration, and opportunities" to the students. On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of Hunan Agricultural University in 2023, the Yuan Longping Scientific Spirit Exhibition Hall was officially launched. Hu Yihua, Dean of the School of Marxism at Hunan Agricultural University and Chief Lecturer of the Yuan Longping Scientific Spirit Exhibition Hall, introduced that the museum focuses on Yuan Longping's research on hybrid rice seeds and has five sections: "The Original Aspiration of Promoting Agriculture," "The Light of the Earth," "Spiritual Radiance," "Passing on the Torch," and "Forge Ahead." Through graphic and textual videos, physical models, manuscript monographs, and multimedia interactions, the museum tells the story of Yuan Longping's scientific dedication to the country and the spiritual connotation of scientists. Entering the central hall of the Yuan Longping Scientific Spirit Exhibition Hall, two oil paintings come into view - one depicts Yuan Lao standing in a golden rice field, observing wheat ears, while the other depicts Yuan Lao standing side by side with people of different skin colors and ages, holding rice ears and smiling into the distance. In today's context and background, what spirit should we inherit from Teacher Yuan? The dream of enjoying the cool breeze under the grass has been realized, and the dream of global coverage of hybrid rice is being realized. In addition to these two dreams, he once said, 'A person is like a seed, to be a good seed.'. ”Hu Yihua said. The profound meaning and philosophical thinking of "a seed" are also the core essence that runs through music ideological and political courses. If 'I Have a Dream' tells the story of Yuan Longping's growth and dreams through lyrics and music, then the children's choir 'Plant a Dream for the World' played at the end of the class uses hybrid rice seeds as imagery to convey Yuan Longping's scientific spirit and patriotic feelings. The seeds you planted grow in every part of the world... The dreams you once planted have sprouted in my heart... "As the melody ends, Hu Yihua guides students to think after class about how to be the" seeds "of the new era on their future life path. The music ideological and political courses that use songs to introduce, ask questions, and point questions are causing a wider response. It is reported that Hunan Agricultural University, with the innovative concept of integrating "ideological and political education+agriculture, rural areas, and farmers+music", has led the organization of more than 100 units from more than 30 provinces (cities, autonomous regions) across the country to launch 5 large-scale music ideological and political courses through cross regional joint programs and "offline+online" methods, with a total attendance of over 300000 people. Stepping out of the classroom and wandering around the campus, it can be seen that Yuan Longping's spirit as a scientist has transformed into many landscapes of Hunan Agricultural University, and Longping Cultural Park is one of them. Here, Yuan Longping's statue stands facing Longping Tower, holding rice ears and gazing into the distance. The golden words "knowledge, sweat, inspiration, opportunity" are engraved on the pedestal. During my internship, when I held a sickle and bent down to cut off the rice ears, I truly realized the weight of 'hard work every grain', and also understood the preciousness of Grandpa Yuan's original intention of wanting everyone in the world to have enough to eat. ”Standing in front of the statue, Li Yi, a student from the College of Agriculture at Hunan Agricultural University, told reporters that personally continuing Yuan Longping's dream is the most vivid lesson that agricultural students have ever taught. Amidst the scattered seeds, this "Four Seasons Song" composed with the spirit of scientists flows leisurely and endlessly. (New Society)
