The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government's Medical and Health Bureau recently announced that the "Greater Bay Area Cross border Direct Ambulance Trial Plan" will be extended to the Nansha campus of Zhuhai People's Hospital and Sun Yat sen University Affiliated First Hospital, providing high-quality, efficient, and more convenient cross-border medical transfer arrangements for residents in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area. To ensure smooth arrangements, the Special Administrative Region Government, in conjunction with the Zhuhai Municipal People's Government, conducted a drill on the 26th to test the cross-border arrangement of ambulances under simulated conditions of transporting patients. It is expected that the trial plan will be extended to Zhuhai city before the end of the year. The Secretary for Health and Welfare of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Lu Chongmao, stated that the government will continue to review the effectiveness and operational experience of the pilot scheme, with the primary consideration of patients' medical needs, safety, and interests. The government will also actively promote the goal of orderly expansion arrangements proposed in the Chief Executive's 2025 Policy Address. It is reported that the one-year "Greater Bay Area Cross border Direct Ambulance Pilot Program" was officially launched by the Hong Kong SAR government in conjunction with the Guangdong Provincial and Shenzhen Municipal governments, as well as the Macau SAR government on November 30, 2024. The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Carrie Lam, proposed in the 2025 Policy Address to work with the Guangdong and Macau governments to systematically expand arrangements for ambulance cross-border transfer of patients, including implementing two-way transfer and including designated hospitals in Zhuhai and Nansha. Since the launch of the pilot program, 16 patients have been transferred from designated delivery hospitals in Shenzhen and Macau (i.e. the University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Hospital and the Earl of Yan Hospital in Macau) to designated public hospitals in Hong Kong.
