2025-09-25
At 6 o'clock in the morning, the sky penetrated through the clouds, and the Huaiji Shuanggan Supply Port Agricultural Base in Zhaoqing, Guangdong was already bustling with activity. Ms. Li and her colleagues skillfully shuttle through the lush green melon fields, accompanied by crisp "clicks". The straight loofahs are picked and placed in bamboo baskets, which are then loaded onto tricycles and sent to the center of the base for sorting. They are neatly packed into fresh-keeping boxes. Zhaoqing, Guangdong is located on the Tropic of Cancer and is the "vegetable basket" of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, while Huaiji is the "hometown of Lingnan vegetables". This place has abundant water resources and a large temperature difference between morning and evening, making it suitable for planting various fruits and vegetables. Our base has a total planting area of over 3000 acres, and every summer and autumn, we plant a variety of vegetables including jiegua, eggplant, bitter gourd, loofah, etc. ”Zhong Xiuyun, the manager of Huaiji Base of Guangdong Quannong Agriculture Co., Ltd., said that every morning, a variety of fresh vegetables depart from here, and after several rounds of turnover, they are sold to various cities in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area. Zhong Xiuyun told reporters that the vegetable base provides more than 50 job opportunities for the surrounding areas. During the busy farming season in winter and spring, there will also be fellow villagers from Yunnan and Guizhou joining the "picking team". At 11 noon, the scorching sun set out from Zhaoqing, accompanied by the roar of the engine and the dew on the green loofah. I wake up at 4am every day, rush to four bases in Zhaoqing to collect vegetables, and depart at noon to deliver the vegetables to the Dongguan distribution base. I can run more than 500 kilometers a day. ”Driver Mr. Gu knows everything, he has to run on this transportation route the next day. At 3 pm, fresh vegetables such as loofah from Zhaoqing, lettuce from Yunnan, potatoes from Inner Mongolia, bamboo shoots from Sichuan, and garlic from Shandong gathered at the Dongguan fruit and vegetable processing base, waiting to be fully prepared and sent to Hong Kong. We have over 5000 square meters of fresh-keeping cold storage in Dongguan. After processing vegetables here, they are not only sold directly to Hong Kong, but also simultaneously delivered to supermarkets, canteens, and large chain restaurants in mainland China. ”Yuan Zhaofei, assistant to the chairman of Guangdong Quannong Agriculture Co., Ltd., said that the company has formulated standard specifications from planting to sales, ensuring high standards throughout the entire process to ensure the safety of vegetable food. Yuan Zhaofei said that through cooperation with scientific research and technology units such as Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences and South China Agricultural University, the company introduces new varieties and technologies every year, continuously improves vegetable quality, and meets consumer demand. The "Quannong No.1" luffa, jointly developed by the company and Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, has also passed the evaluation of non major crop varieties in Guangdong Province. At exactly 5pm, as the sky gradually darkened, trucks loaded with vegetables began to depart from Dongguan one after another. After customs inspection, they were transported to Wenjindu Port in Shenzhen. After nightfall, these vegetables will be transported to wholesale markets and supermarkets across Hong Kong, neatly arranged on shelves. According to customs statistics, Guangdong will supply 346400 tons of vegetables and edible mushrooms to Hong Kong and Macao in 2024, with a total value of 2.194 billion yuan. A variety of high-quality agricultural products from mainland China continuously enrich Hong Kong's "vegetable basket" and enrich the dining choices of Hong Kong residents. Nowadays, with technological upgrades and improved transportation, fresh vegetables are stably supplied to residents in the Greater Bay Area with more affordable and high-quality dishes. The reporter learned from the Agriculture and Rural Bureau of Zhaoqing City that there are a total of 209 agricultural product export filing bases and 48 agricultural and food enterprises supplying to Hong Kong and Macao, covering multiple categories such as frozen poultry, vegetables, milk, and aquatic products. In order to facilitate the sale of agricultural products to Hong Kong and Macao, Zhaoqing Customs and Zhaoqing Agriculture and Rural Bureau have jointly created the "Xiaozhao Optimal Selection" testing platform, which integrates advanced testing equipment and excellent technical teams to conduct testing on more than 9500 key indicators, meeting the diversified certification needs of domestic and foreign markets.
