Millennium civilization rejuvenates in the wave of digitization

2025-09-23

Human cultural heritage is as brilliant as a treasure, carrying the memory and wisdom of history. When Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was rebuilt with accurate digital archives after the fire, and when the classic Cave 285 in the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang broke through space restrictions and changed from "close to the sky" to "within reach", we saw that digitalization is making silent cultural relics "open" and static history fresh with unprecedented power. On September 17, the 2025 World Internet Conference Cultural Heritage Digitalization Forum was held in Xi'an with the theme of "Digital Connection, Ancient and Modern Intelligent Drawing Civilization - Jointly Building a Community of Shared Future in Cyberspace". The main forum focused on topics such as "protection and inheritance", "technology and innovation", "industry and empowerment", "openness and co governance", and released the World Internet Conference Cultural Heritage Digitalization Case Set (2025), which fully demonstrated the latest achievements and practical experience in the field of world cultural heritage digitization. From "seeing through the glass" to "experiencing firsthand", entering the exhibition area of cultural heritage digital masterpieces, the interactive experience game of Xi'an Beilin is eye-catching. As a gathering place for ancient Chinese cultural classics and calligraphy art treasures from various dynasties, Xi'an Beilin uses digital means to allow visitors to personally experience the entire process of stele carving. Standing in front of the "Stele Interaction" screen, the audience seems to have transformed into ancient stone carving artists. They can choose their favorite stone material from various types such as "granite" and "marble", and then use touch control to make the vermilion ink appear on the "stone surface" like flowing clouds and water. After writing, the screen instantly switches to carving mode. At this moment, the audience lightly touches the screen with their fingertips, each touch accompanied by a stone powder splash effect, making people feel like they are holding a carving knife. After the carving is completed, the audience can also sign their name and scan the code to save it. Not far away, the AI digital exhibition at Jilin City Museum is also eye-catching. A Qing Dynasty jade phoenix crown embedded with emerald green is no longer a static cultural relic, but through artificial intelligence voice and animation, it "opens its mouth" to tell the audience its origin - "Legend has it that I am the phoenix crown used by Ulanara Nali, the younger brother of Empress Qianlong, to marry Zhengfu Jin..." The exquisite painting displays the story plot with a gentle whisper, presenting the details and historical background of the phoenix crown to the audience. At this moment, cultural heritage is no longer a silent display in a glass showcase, but a tangible, sensory, and participatory cultural experience. This vivid and vivid display not only lowers the threshold of cultural cognition, but also fits the characteristics of young people's pursuit of technological experience and emotional connection. "Antiquities" meet "New Helper" and want to know how much you look like the Terra Cotta Warriors? In front of the "Terracotta Warriors Far Away Are You" facial recognition interactive screen, the audience takes a photo and uploads it to the camera. The system immediately matches it with the facial data of the Qin terracotta warriors unearthed thousands of years ago to generate similarity comparisons. This "face to face" across time and space not only makes us intuitively feel the exquisite craftsmanship of the Terra Cotta Warriors, but also makes us ponder how cultural relics can be reborn after a long time? Faced with damaged and incomplete cultural relics, a research team from Northwest University and experts from the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum Museum have collaborated to bring innovative solutions. "In the process of archaeological excavation, we made 3D digital scanning of the fragments of the Terra Cotta Warriors, loaded the 3D model into the computer to extract the fracture surface of the fragments, and then matched the adjacent relationship of the fragments according to the characteristics of the fracture surface." Li Kang, associate professor of the School of Computer Science of Northwest University, said that this method is not only efficient, but also avoids the secondary damage of cultural relics. Even if the cultural relics are incomplete, they can be restored by AI according to data deduction. Digital technology is reshaping the way cultural relics are protected, allowing the broken to be intact, the disappeared to be reproduced, and the still to come alive. Looking back at the Forbidden City in Beijing, since its official opening in 1925, it has undergone the southward relocation, restoration, and modernization of cultural relics. In recent years, the Forbidden City has actively promoted digitalization and established a digital library. Vice President of the Palace Museum, Zhu Hongwen, stated that the latest and most typical stage achievement of the Palace Museum in terms of culture and technology is the use of digital twin technology to protect ancient buildings and cultural relics on the platform, and ultimately achieve nine major application scenarios such as cross time and space multi person travel through continuous construction. At the same time, in Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, advanced digital technology is solving the problems in the protection of ancient buildings. The 'robotic dog' scans ancient buildings with millisecond level accuracy, overcoming the difficulties of insufficient accuracy and contact damage in traditional manual surveying. This innovative way of protection and inheritance brings the historical information, artistic value, and cultural memory carried by cultural heritage to eternal vitality and truly come to life. The common protection of the treasures of human civilization is more of contemporary significance than the restoration of individual cultural relics or the revitalization of individual sites. It is through the concept of open governance that these achievements of civilization can transcend national borders and become a common treasure accessible and enjoyed by all mankind. In front of the exhibition booth of the Chinese Ancient Books Intelligent Service Platform, visitors can easily search for over 13000 types of digital resources of ancient books, totaling over 2.82 million pages, with just a touch of the screen. This platform, led by the National Library and jointly built with national ancient book storage units, greatly improves the efficiency of resource utilization and enables ancient books to move from "heavy collection and light use" to "open sharing". Sun Qingwei, President of Northwest University, introduced that the university is committed to building a new platform for international cooperation in Silk Road archaeology. It has jointly conducted archaeological investigations and international academic exchanges multiple times, and actively promoted the digital empowerment of cultural heritage revitalization. Its independently developed robots, intelligent cultural relics 3D scanners, etc. have played a key role in site protection. These actions all reflect the concept of open governance. Civilization mutual learning should not be limited to physical exhibitions, but should also move towards data exchange, technology sharing, and standard building. Cultural heritage is both national and global. Looking towards the future, China will continue to use digitalization as its wings to promote the wider and deeper revitalization, inheritance, exchange, and sharing of cultural heritage on a global scale, keeping the tree of human civilization vibrant in the digital age.
