The UNESCO International STEM Education Research Institute was established in Shanghai on the 21st. Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng, on behalf of the Chinese government, signed the Site Agreement and Operating Agreement of the International STEM Education Research Institute with UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay. Huai Jinpeng stated that the International STEM Education Research Institute is an important achievement of China's cooperation with UNESCO. The Chinese government will conscientiously fulfill its commitments to the international community, cooperate and innovate with all parties, actively support UNESCO in building this center into an important research and cooperation platform with global influence, and make positive contributions to promoting the development of STEM education worldwide. In November 2023, the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference passed a resolution by consensus to establish the International STEM Education Research Institute in Shanghai, China, marking the first time a UNESCO Category I center has been established in China. Azul é stated that the International STEM Education Research Institute will join UNESCO's important global cluster of institutions, not only promoting the development of STEM education in China, but also supporting UNESCO's STEM education vision globally. This is the first category one center established by UNESCO in the Asia Pacific region. ”Qin Changwei, Secretary General of the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO, stated that it is also an important international public good provided by China's implementation of the Global Governance Initiative for STEM education governance worldwide. ”STEM refers to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through interdisciplinary integration and practical orientation, STEM education cultivates students' innovation ability, problem-solving ability, and social responsibility, which is a key path to support future social development and global sustainability. Currently, a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation is rapidly developing, and countries are facing the challenge of a shortage of innovative talents. Vigorously developing STEM education and cultivating more innovative talents in science and technology is the common expectation of developing and developed countries. According to the constitution adopted by UNESCO, the Institute will plan and organize extensive STEM education experimental research, develop appropriate teaching/learning interventions and teaching practices, establish a global pool of individual and institutional professionals, and monitor and supervise the progress of STEM education. In the future, the research institute will become an international collaborative platform for promoting innovative research, and play a central role in information exchange, networking, resource and capacity building, promoting inclusive, equitable, appropriate and high-quality STEM education for all at all stages from early childhood to adulthood.
