L2 level assisted driving will usher in the national standard of intelligent vehicles. How to drive safely on the road?

Can "smart driving" operate on various road conditions? Is' freeing hands' trustworthy? With the rapid development of intelligent connected vehicles, the combination of driving assistance functions accelerates boarding, and its safety applications have attracted market attention. On the 17th, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology publicly solicited opinions on the mandatory national standard "Safety Requirements for Intelligent Connected Vehicle Combined Driving Assistance Systems", which will establish a "safety standard" for system applications. According to relevant data, from January to July 2025, the sales volume of new passenger cars with combined driving assistance systems in China was 7.7599 million, a year-on-year increase of 21.31%, with a penetration rate of 62.58%. The combination driving assistance system has become a highlight of new car models in the market and an important consideration for consumers when choosing. New problems and challenges arise as a result. On the one hand, there is a lack of a unified baseline for product performance, and there are differences in the reliability and stability of the combined driving assistance systems of different car companies in some complex scenarios, which poses potential risks to road traffic safety. On the other hand, concepts such as "advanced intelligent driving" and "zero takeover" dominate the industry, and some companies blur the boundaries between "driver assistance" and "autonomous driving", downplaying system limitations and causing individual drivers to relax their vigilance. In this context, accelerating the development of safety standards for combined driving assistance systems has become an urgent task. The standards publicly solicited for opinions this time fill the safety baseline gap of China's combined driving assistance system products, and will provide key technical basis for industry access, quality supervision, and post event traceability. ”The person in charge of the Equipment Industry Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said. What is a combined driving assistance system? It is closely related to the classification of automotive driving automation. The existing national standards divide it into six levels, L0 to L5. Generally speaking, the more work the system can "take over", the higher the level of driving automation. At present, most of the car models sold in the market belong to the L2 level category, which is combined driving assistance. The system can only undertake some basic driving operation tasks, such as controlling speed, lane keeping, etc. The so-called "smart driving" does not have the function of "autonomous driving", and the driver is still the ultimate responsible subject. Liu Fawang, Deputy Director of the Equipment Industry Development Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, told reporters that in order to ensure the safe operation of the combined driving assistance system in complex and changing real traffic scenarios, prevent risks and hidden dangers, standards regulate the system's safety capabilities from multiple dimensions, and support the improvement of road traffic safety levels. In the research and development stage, strengthen security risk design and "prevent risks in advance"; In the production and manufacturing stage, ensure the stability and traceability of production, and "make it stable and traceable"; During the operation phase, dynamically monitor the vehicle's operating status to achieve the ability to monitor and report. What specific considerations are worth paying attention to in setting this standard? Gong Jinfeng, Deputy General Manager of China Automotive Technology Research Center Co., Ltd., analyzed that while maintaining coordination and compatibility with international regulations, the standards should further refine their technical content to ensure that they not only conform to the current development status of China's industry, but also build a solid defense line for the safe operation of the system. The standard has established test scenarios for traffic environments such as road intersections, construction areas, roundabouts, and tunnels, and has also added detection and response capability tests for targets such as pedal type two wheeled motorcycles, temporary obstacles, and rollover vehicles, which are more in line with the complex characteristics of China's road traffic environment. ”Gong Jinfeng said. In addition, the standard requires the system to confirm whether the driver has completed the usage training after each power on or ignition; The system is required to have the ability to detect hand detachment and line of sight detachment. Once the driver experiences hand detachment or line of sight detachment during system activation, the system should issue prompts and alarms. Consumers can use the instructions provided by the vehicle manufacturer to clearly understand the system's capabilities and limitations, the correct way to use the system, and the responsibilities that the driver should bear, in order to avoid misuse. ”Yang Yanding, Deputy Chief Engineer and President of the R&D Institute of Dongfeng Motor Group Co., Ltd., stated. Safety has always been the cornerstone of the development of new technologies. Gong Weijie, Deputy Secretary General of the China Society of Automotive Engineers, stated that the introduction of standards not only provides strong technical support for regulatory authorities and promotes the establishment of a solid safety bottom line, but also guides the entire industry chain to focus on technological innovation and product quality improvement. The relevant person in charge of the Equipment Industry Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology stated that the next step will be to accelerate the release, implementation, and supervision of standards based on public feedback, ensure the effective implementation of various safety technical requirements, and effectively safeguard the high-quality development of the intelligent connected vehicle industry, and protect the travel safety of the people.
