As the child grows taller, the supporting facilities should also follow suit

2025-09-16

Recently, the head of the National Health Commission introduced at a press conference of the State Council Information Office that during the 14th Five Year Plan period, the nutritional status of children in China has continuously improved, and the average height of males and females aged 6 to 17 has increased by 2.1 centimeters and 2.2 centimeters respectively. The trend of children growing taller has a long history. The results of the 8th National Survey on Student Physical Fitness and Health released by the Ministry of Education in 2021 showed that compared with 2014, the height of male students aged 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, and 16-18 increased by 0.52, 1.26, 1.69, and 0.95 centimeters respectively, and the height of female students increased by 0.72, 1.24, 0.97, and 0.80 centimeters respectively in 2019. The data is reassuring and in line with people's daily perceptions. In real life, it is not uncommon for teenagers to grow up to 1.8 meters tall. From a distance, they may appear tall, but up close, they have a baby face. However, the current public service system and facilities that people are accustomed to have not been timely matched with the rapid "growth" of children. Currently, many scenic spots, amusement parks, and experience centers still use height as the main criterion for purchasing tickets, such as free tickets for those under 1.2 meters and tickets for those between 1.2 and 1.4 meters and a half. The reason for this is that the safety of some amusement projects is directly related to height. If judged only by age, it may increase the risk factor of playing, and in addition, it will also increase the time and cost of verification. This consideration does not conform to the principle of maximizing the interests of children. In terms of children's tickets, railways are no longer solely based on height, but will implement a dual track ticketing system based on age or height standards starting from 2023. Recently, the new regulations of China Railway Group have adopted age standards. From height to age, this transformation reflects the people-oriented service philosophy. At the end of last year, Shanghai Disneyland announced the cancellation of height restrictions and the use of age as the sole criterion for ticket purchases, reflecting respect for the differences in children's growth and indicating that factors such as safety and verification costs are not obstacles. Not only children's tickets, but also the desks that children have to deal with every day need to be adjusted. Previously, a media investigation found that there were many places where desks and chairs did not match the height of students, and the phenomenon of "low matching" desks and chairs became a "growing annoyance" for children, invisibly increasing health hazards such as myopia and hunchback. The current national standard for desks and chairs used in various regions is still the "Functional Dimensions and Technical Requirements for School Tables and Chairs" released in 2014, which specifies 11 models of desks and chairs and their corresponding suitable height ranges for seated individuals. However, this version has been around for over 10 years now, and the children's heights have also undergone significant changes. Furthermore, this standard has not been implemented effectively in reality. According to reports, a sampling survey of 660 primary and secondary schools in a central province in 2021 showed that less than 20% of the desks and chairs met the national standard requirements. In addition, a survey conducted in Shenzhen in 2019 showed that some local middle school students are over 1.9 meters tall, and the maximum size of the national standard No. 0 desks and chairs can no longer meet the demand. As children grow taller day by day, corresponding supporting services and facilities should also keep up. Actually, change is not difficult. Relevant departments may update standards in a timely manner, strengthen the procurement, management, and supervision of school desks and chairs, and keep up with the growth rate of students' height. In addition, policies for children's tickets in areas such as public transportation, amusement facilities, and tourist attractions should also be sorted out to maximize the principle of child friendliness. Currently, various regions are building child friendly cities to provide suitable conditions, environment, and services for children's growth and development. Being more considerate and caring, giving children more love and kindness, can accumulate more energy for society. (New Society)
