Make modern architecture more reflective of the spirit of Chinese aesthetics

2025-09-15

Architecture is one of the most direct and tangible expressions of human civilization, as well as a vivid reflection of urban image and cultural taste. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that "architecture is the most intuitive 'face' of a city, and we need to strengthen the management of architectural design to make Chinese urban architecture more reflect Chinese aesthetics and the trend of the times." This important statement is in line with General Secretary Xi Jinping's series of important statements on inheriting and promoting excellent traditional Chinese culture, providing scientific guidance and fundamental principles for promoting the inheritance and innovation of Chinese aesthetics in urban architecture. Chinese aesthetics is an aesthetic system formed on the profound foundation of over 5000 years of Chinese civilization, which embodies the unique ideological and value concepts of the Chinese nation. Its spiritual core is rooted in the integration of diverse ideological cultures such as Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, and has formed a systematic theoretical system through long-term philosophical speculation and artistic practice. Chinese aesthetics is an important component of China's excellent traditional culture, which deeply embodies the ideas and concepts of "unity of heaven and man" in the universe, "coexistence of reality and virtuality" in space, "the art of following the natural path" in craftsmanship, and "harmony in diversity" in harmony. It has profoundly influenced the style of Chinese architecture. To make urban architecture in our country more reflect Chinese aesthetics and the trend of the times, we need to implement the architectural policy of "applicability, economy, green, and beauty", combine the spirit of Chinese aesthetics with contemporary aesthetic pursuits, and enable modern urban architecture to maintain its historical style while showcasing the vitality of the times. Promote the deep integration of Chinese aesthetic spirit and modern architectural technology, and build a strong cultural foundation for urban architecture. Promoting the creative transformation and innovative development of Chinese aesthetics is the only way to achieve the inheritance and innovation of Chinese aesthetics in urban architecture. Specifically, it is necessary to understand and absorb the spiritual core and value concepts of Chinese aesthetics, and avoid simple replication and rough imitation of traditional architectural forms, symbols, structures, etc; At the same time, based on contemporary aesthetic pursuits, social demands, and technological conditions, the traditional aesthetic spirit is transformed into an architectural language that conforms to modern life and reflects the characteristics of the times. At the practical level, innovative design concepts deeply integrate the spirit and elements of Chinese aesthetics in terms of spatial imagery, structural form, material color, and fully utilize modern technological means such as parametric design and intelligent construction to organically integrate Chinese aesthetic elements with modern architectural functions, achieving the revitalization and inheritance of historical context. For example, the design of Beijing Daxing International Airport fully embodies the integration of Chinese aesthetic spirit and modern technology. The overall shape resembling the phoenix spreading its wings not only vividly interprets the traditional Chinese cultural imagery and aesthetic spirit, but also achieves a high degree of unity between the beauty of form and the beauty of spirit through the use of large-span steel structures and green energy-saving technology. Promote the organic integration of local development needs and regional cultural genes, and highlight the unique charm of urban architecture. Chinese aesthetics is not a single model, but presents a variety of regional characteristics. Adhering to local conditions and classification guidance in modern architectural practice, allowing urban architecture to reflect regional cultural genes, helps to inherit Chinese aesthetics while fully preserving and leveraging local characteristics and advantages. For example, the gardens in Jiangnan, the arcade buildings in Lingnan, and the cave dwellings in Northwest China all embody the Chinese wisdom of adapting to local conditions. For example, the Yanqing division of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics adopts the concept of "mountain and forest venues, ecological Winter Olympics", and disperses the layout of competition venues and other buildings, without breaking the mountain shape or forest appearance, achieving the organic integration of architecture and nature, reflecting the connotation of Chinese landscape culture and the concept of sustainable development. For a period of time, some cities have blindly pursued innovative and "tall and novel" architectural designs, resulting in a weakening of urban characteristics and a lack of aesthetic connotation. To make urban architecture in our country more reflect Chinese aesthetics and the trend of the times, it is necessary to deeply explore the unique aesthetic genes of the region and avoid the homogenization tendency of "one face for a thousand cities" and "one appearance for ten thousand buildings". New urban buildings should fully consider the local natural environment, social needs, and cultural background, and avoid adopting a single modern style. To deeply explore regional cultural resources, it is necessary to reflect regional characteristics in terms of functional layout, material selection, and artistic expression, while also meeting the practical needs of local industrial development and the improvement of residents' quality of life. Promote mutual learning and exchange between local architectural concepts and international cutting-edge experiences, showcasing the openness and inclusiveness of Chinese aesthetics. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that "Chinese civilization is an open system formed through continuous exchange and mutual learning with other civilizations." To make China's urban architecture more reflect Chinese aesthetics and the trend of the times, it is necessary to build an open and inclusive exchange and mutual learning mechanism, strengthen dialogue with world architectural civilization, not only showcase the unique charm of Chinese architectural aesthetics to the world, but also absorb and learn from the beneficial experience and cutting-edge technology of urban architecture in various countries. In the new era where we can already see the world as a whole, we must strengthen our cultural confidence, highlight the value and characteristics of Chinese aesthetics in urban architecture, and avoid overly worshipping modern symbols such as super high-rise buildings. Adhere to respecting tradition in ideology, daring to innovate in practice, and being good at expressing Chinese aesthetics internationally, promote the international dissemination of Chinese aesthetics, and showcase Chinese wisdom, style, and temperament in architectural practice. In recent years, under the promotion of the joint construction of the "the Belt and Road" initiative, a number of public buildings and infrastructure projects integrating Chinese aesthetics and local cultural characteristics have emerged in relevant countries and regions. For example, the Vientiane Railway Station between China and Laos emphasizes "the city of sandalwood and the friendship between China and Laos" in its design concept, which not only reflects the elements of traditional Chinese architecture, but also combines the characteristics of Vientiane's regional environment, showing the achievements of cultural exchanges and integration between China and Laos. These architectural works not only meet the local development needs, but also embody the spirit and elements of Chinese aesthetics, demonstrating the cultural confidence of China in the new era, and providing inspiration and reference for making urban architecture in China more reflect Chinese aesthetics and contemporary trends.
