Memory of the Flying Tigers: The Relay of Sino US Friendship spanning over 80 Years
2025-09-11
In front of the simulated cockpit at the permanent exhibition of the Flying Tigers, Rick Peterson, a descendant of the American Flying Tigers, uses modern technology to immerse himself in crossing the "Hump Route". When the steep snow capped mountains appeared before his eyes, flying over the peaks of the mountains, he also seemed to have traveled through time and witnessed the relay of flying tiger friendship that had lasted for more than 80 years. The Flying Tigers permanent exhibition will be held on September 7th in Liuzhou, Guangxi. On the 7th and 8th, several descendants of the Flying Tigers, including Rick Peterson, visited the former site of the Flying Tigers and the Flying Tigers Friendship School in Liuzhou, Guangxi, to reminisce about the past and continue their friendship. The official name of the Flying Tigers is the Chinese Air Force United States Volunteer Air Force for China. In 1942, China's last international channel for external communication was cut off. Rick Peterson's father, Bill Peterson, flew fighter jets repeatedly through the "Hump Route" known as the "Death Route" to transport aid supplies to China. Through the images, I can truly feel the dangers that Flying Tigers veterans face every day. ”Rick Peterson said emotionally. At the exhibition site, he carefully observed old photos and materials related to the camel hump route, and took pictures one by one with his phone for preservation until he finally left the exhibition hall. I hope to stay here from morning till night and spend more time learning about this story. The Flying Tigers' permanent exhibition covers a total area of 6000 square meters and has five themed exhibition areas. Through rich physical materials, scene restoration, and advanced exhibition methods, showcase the historical context of the American Flying Tigers fighting alongside Chinese military and civilians in the war. These precious cultural relics include the first generation leather emblem of the Flying Tigers designed by Disney, the vertical speedometer on the P40 fighter jet, American made mine detectors, American made telegraph machines, and more. Across time and space, as well as mountains and seas, this exhibition hall has become a bond that connects the emotions of people from both countries. Jenny, a descendant of the Flying Tigers, stood in front of the collection she donated for a long time, choked up and told the story of her uncle and China. Jenny's uncle Howard unfortunately sacrificed himself during the Chinese aid campaign, and the crash site was once a mystery. This used to be a regret for our family. Later, Chinese and American volunteers relay the search and find Howard's crash site for Jenny's family. Uncle is buried here, and China has become my hometown as a result. To commemorate this friendship, Jenny donated a large number of historical objects, old photos, and other items related to the Flying Tigers. Ross, a descendant of a veteran of the American Doolittle Air Force, pointed out that the exhibition pays tribute to the sacrifices and contributions of the people of the United States and China during the War of Resistance Against Japan. "Back then, Chinese military and civilians risked their lives to rescue 75 Doolittle pilots, 64 of whom were rescued," he emphasized. The exhibition enhances mutual understanding between the United States and China through historical facts. "The opinions of the governments of the United States and China may not always be consistent, but the people have always been friendly. This is my third visit to China, and the Chinese people are very enthusiastic and spare no effort to showcase history and culture to me." Jeffrey Green, the chairman of the American Chinese Aviation Heritage Foundation, believes that this is the best exhibition he has ever seen with the Flying Tigers. Green pointed to the statues of American veterans and Chinese civilians fighting side by side and said, "Here, it's like receiving a message from over 80 years ago, telling us that the United States and China can cooperate." As he left the exhibition hall, Rick Peterson said that these historical materials were extremely precious, and he was organizing his father's deeds and preparing to share them with his family. My daughter is about to give birth, and I will soon have another grandson. This is the best gift for him, "he said." The younger generation didn't know about my great grandfather's deeds before, but when I go back, we will watch videos and tell stories together. "Now, the Flying Tiger friendship is moving from history to the future. The "Flying Tigers Friendship School and Youth Leader Program" launched in 2023 has established over 100 Flying Tigers Friendship Schools in China, and the number is still increasing. Jeffrey Green hopes to pass on the spirit of the Flying Tiger from generation to generation and contribute to the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations. (New Society)
