2025-09-09

On the 8th, the first 12 year integrated short track speed skating sports school in China officially opened in Qitaihe City. More than 200 new students from 7 provinces across the country have entered the campus, embarking on the path of training and learning in the short track speed skating system from primary school to vocational school. This city, known as the "City of Olympic Champions", has cultivated 14 world champions, won 7 Winter Olympics gold medals, and 186 world-class event gold medals for over 50 years, once again exploring innovative ways for China's ice and snow sports talent training model. The origin of Qitaihe and short track speed skating can be traced back to the 1970s. The first coach Meng Qingyu led the first team on the rudimentary outdoor ice rink, creating a legend of "ice skates passed down from generation to generation and champions emerged from generation to generation". From Yang Yang's breakthrough of achieving zero gold medals in the Chinese Winter Olympics, to Wang Meng becoming the "triple champion" of a single Winter Olympics, and to new generation athletes such as Fan Kexin and Yang Jingru continuing to shine on the world stage, Qitaihe has lifted half of China's Winter Olympics short track speed skating medal table with the strength of a city. Now, this city full of honors has once again taken the lead in solving problems. The establishment of the first 12 year integrated sports school for short track speed skating in China marks the systematic upgrade of the "Qitaihe Model". The school has established a three in one curriculum system of cultural learning, specialized training, and comprehensive quality expansion, and innovatively implemented a "tiered" training mechanism. The basic stage of 6-8 years old focuses on "ice feeling" cultivation and interest stimulation, while 8-12 years old strengthens physical fitness and technical standardization training. After the age of 12, students will be selected and sent to the provincial team or even the national team. In terms of teaching arrangements, in addition to regular cultural courses, the school also offers specialized training in short track speed skating and quality development courses in traditional Chinese culture, etiquette, etc., and implements an integrated management of "scientific diet+military accommodation", effectively alleviating the long-term contradiction between athletes' cultural learning and professional training. In terms of policy support, students in compulsory education stage enjoy full exemption from "accommodation, study, and training", and those who meet the standards for competitive performance can further enjoy full exemption from "food, accommodation, study, and training". It is worth mentioning that Winter Olympics champions Yang Yang and Wang Meng will regularly come to the school for guidance, forming a dual track training system of "grassroots coaches+champion guidance". Zheng Haiyu, the principal of Qitaihe Short Track Speed Skating Sports School, introduced that the core advantage of the 12 year integrated sports school is to broaden the growth path of athletes through deep integration of sports and education. Students can either pursue professional competition, enter universities for further studies based on their sports talents, or transform into reserve forces for ice and snow sports such as coaches and referees, achieving diversified development. In the first class of enrollment, the freshmen visited a photo exhibition of Winter Olympics champions from Qitaihe and listened attentively to the stories of generations of athletes striving for excellence. Subsequently, all new students began their first standardized training on the ground - starting from the most basic movements, taking the first step towards their ice and snow dreams in a down-to-earth manner. New student Fu Fanglin from Xinjiang said, "My dream is to become a world champion, raise the national flag and play the national anthem on the field." Liu Rui, a second level inspector of the Sports Bureau of Heilongjiang Province, said that setting up the country's first short track speed skating 12 year consistent sports school in Qitaihe fully reflects the high trust and expectations of Qitaihe at all levels from the country to Heilongjiang Province. The continuous outstanding achievements of this "Olympic Champion City" make it an ideal place to promote and explore new paths for cultivating talents in ice and snow sports. We look forward to Qitaihe nurturing more champions and creating more glory in the future. (New Society)
