Let animation become an artistic fertile ground that nourishes children's souls

Animation is an art created through artistic means, which was once known as "art film" in China, demonstrating the importance of art to animation. Art design creates a colorful animated world through stylized visual presentation, opening a door for children to experience the external world and appreciate truth, goodness, and beauty. In recent years, China's animation industry has developed rapidly and has formed a complete industrial ecosystem. Overall, the level and production capacity of children's animation production in China have significantly improved, but the problem cannot be ignored. It can be said that the situation of "mature industrialization and lagging artistic views" still exists widely in the children's animation industry. Looking at the colorful domestic children's animation market, it is not difficult to find that high-quality animation is still scarce, with a high degree of homogenization and standardization, and the overall artistic level is not satisfactory. For example, in terms of content, there are more tricks and less creativity, and the narrative mode of "fighting monsters and upgrading" is common, with the emergence of internet meme culture; Visually, the special effects are gorgeous and the style is similar, with 3D animation style dominating. In a sense, formulaic storytelling, smooth models, programmatic cartoon rendering, and dazzling special effects seem to have become a common "children's animation commercial style". Beauty should be diverse, and the high degree of convergence in children's animation styles has discounted its potential aesthetic value. Animation is a comprehensive space for aesthetic education. As a comprehensive art, animation has a unique aesthetic education function. It not only carries humorous and exaggerated performances, bringing joyful experiences to children, but also deeply integrates many art categories such as art, design, music, literature, etc., which can enhance children's aesthetic and artistic sensitivity unconsciously. Animation is an art museum and an important way for children to experience artistic diversity. It can be said that there are as many art forms as there are animation styles. Animators are like magicians, drawing on the diverse beauty of world art and melting it into various styles of animation forms. Since its birth, animation has formed a variety of artistic styles such as ink painting, oil painting, printmaking, watercolor, mural, Paper Cuttings, etc. For example, the traditional animation "Little Tadpole Looking for Mom" is a lively interpretation of Qi Baishi's ink painting, while the current "Summer of Little Monsters in Chinese Wonderland" and the blockbuster "Little Monsters on Langlang Mountain" use green mountains and rivers and freehand brushwork to create a traditional aesthetic atmosphere. High quality animation art can connect children with a wider range of art forms while watching movies, immersing them in the knowledge of art history in textbooks. For example, in Chinese painting, aesthetic concepts such as "ink divided into five colors", "blank space imagery", "virtual and real harmony", and "vivid charm" can be directly experienced in ink animation. Animation is a museum where children can experience the vastness of human civilization. The artist 'Search for Qifeng and Draft' has constructed an animated world, incorporating rich natural landscapes and historical culture into scene and character design, making it a window to experience national and world cultures. For example, "Chang'an 30000 Miles" replicates the details of history, restoring the Tang style and ancient charm. The entire film is like a special exhibition of Tang Dynasty cultural relics, with Tang figurines and paintings shining brightly. It is also like an exhibition of ancient architecture, allowing viewers to travel between ancient buildings such as the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Yellow Crane Tower, experiencing a cultural exposition that transcends time and space. For example, "Kung Fu Panda" presents a profound Chinese cultural world, "Coco" showcases rich Mexican folk customs, and so on. Animation is a music hall, and many excellent anime soundtracks are also classic, extending the expressive space of animation art and bringing audiences a different kind of shock and emotion. Through animated works, one can experience music cultures full of ethnic characteristics from around the world. For example, the traditional African folk songs in "The Lion King" that blend rock and jazz elements. Traditional Chinese animation also incorporates rich folk music, such as the graceful and ethereal flute in "Pastoral Flute", the deep and indifferent guqin in "Landscape Love", and the magnificent ancient bell in "Nezha Roars in the Sea"... These ethnic music and nationalized art styles together construct an Eastern aesthetic atmosphere, providing an ideal space for children to deeply experience ethnic art. Animation is still a library, and many animations are adapted from literary classics, such as the classic animation "Monkey King" and the animated series "Journey to the West", which are excellent adaptations of literature, allowing children to gain enlightenment through watching. Some works not only convey the spirit of the original work through animation, but also further enrich artistic expression, such as the animation "The Girl in the Alps" adapted from the classic children's literature "Heidi". The cute character designs, pure scene designs, and fresh and bright colors embody the freedom and warmth in literature; The animation "The Old Man and the Sea" adapted from Hemingway's novel depicts the atmosphere of the struggle between humans and nature with delicate oil painting strokes. Through the translation of literature through animation, more children can gain the spiritual strength and humanistic care contained in it while watching the film. In the face of diverse art styles and a vast array of animation sources, it is important to effectively utilize the aesthetic education function of animation through targeted selection and reasonable planning. Based on the developmental characteristics of children's visual psychology, we can try to make effective choices and promotions from multiple aspects such as "temperature", "breadth", and "depth" to plan suitable animation viewing plans for children. Firstly, in response to the visual issues in current children's animation, it is necessary to filter and expand on the artistic style. Hand drawn animation has an emotional warmth that digital animation does not possess, and can serve as the first step for children to experience animation art. Among them, lower age children are suitable for more simple visual and narrative styles, such as Peppa Pig, which has simple lines, exaggerated proportions, generalized graphics, simple modeling but distinctive features, and is full of childish beauty and childlike interest, and is popular with lower age children. We can also pay attention to more children's simple stroke style works with hand drawn texture, such as "Sarah and Duck" and "Little Mouse Bobo". In addition, images with handmade textures can allow children to experience a natural sense of closeness and establish effective emotional connections with the external world. Our country has developed handmade origami animations for children in the early days. Many children's animations have also noticed this and added more handmade textures in 3D production, such as "Blue Koala" that simulates oil painting texture and "Chicken Rainbow" that simulates watercolor blending. Eliminating dazzling special effects, allowing children to watch animations as if reading a picture book, experiencing beauty in diverse art styles, and expressing imagination in the texture and blank space of the images, thus receiving nourishment from art. Secondly, expand the breadth of animation viewing. The main genres of animation are short films, feature films, and series films. The story capacity, narrative rhythm, and artistic characteristics of different genres vary. Among them, short films have a small volume and usually do some artistic exploration and experimentation; Feature films, also known as big movies, have a large volume and complete narrative structure, and are a form of deep storytelling that reflects artistic integrity; Animated series is currently the mainstream form of children's animation, with a continuously expanding narrative capacity, and is an important way to cultivate animation IP. Parents can expand and supplement their children's animation choices based on their age group and viewing habits. For example, series films often have a relatively fixed style, and some artistic short films can be chosen as extensions, such as the short films with different styles during the "art film" period in China. As children grow older, it is appropriate to introduce feature films with strong artistic and humanistic qualities, such as animated documentaries and animated biographies, to allow them to experience the depth and breadth of the world through animation. It is worth noting that there are many children's animations on current short video platforms. We should realize that fragmented viewing is difficult to provide a complete aesthetic experience. While identifying the quality of these short video animations, we should also pay attention to guiding children in a timely manner. Finally, emphasize the value of classics and extend into the depths of tradition. New animations emerge endlessly, and classic animations that have been accumulated over time are also worth savoring. They may not be so trendy, and the rhythm may not be so immediate, but the passage of time cannot conceal the beauty of art itself and the shining humanistic values and radiance in the works. We can still feel the warmth of the world in 'The Mole's Story' and listen to the language of love in pure silent films; Experience the power of fantasy over reality in Doraemon, and see love and companionship in every miracle; Insight into human nature through the satire and humor of 'The Three Monks', reflecting on individual values and collective interests; Experience life education in 'Snow Children' and appreciate truth, goodness, and beauty in a fresh and elegant world... These classic animations, which embody the artist's ingenuity and love, can still serve as high-quality spiritual food for children today. Excellent animation is a spiritual paradise for childhood, enveloping children's fantasies and innocence, guiding them to experience art and life, and enriching their understanding and description of the world. At present, valuing the potential of animation art education and making animation truly a fertile ground for nurturing children's hearts should be a common topic for practitioners and parents. As the older generation animation artist Lin Wenxiao envisioned in his creative notes for "Snow Children": "I hope to use this lively, cute, vivid, and touching little story to educate children, give them the enjoyment of beauty, cultivate their artistic qualities from an early age, and sow a seed of beauty in their young hearts."
