2025-09-05

The "Hackathon" competition of the G20 Research and Innovation Working Group opened on the 2nd, and participants will focus on working together to address disaster risks in the era of accelerated climate change. This competition lasts for 4 days and is hosted by the South African Ministry of Science and Technology Innovation, which holds the rotating presidency of the G20. Hackathon is an innovative competition where participants typically form teams within a short period of time to develop software or hardware prototypes around a specific theme, and conduct demonstrations and evaluations. The statement released by the South African Department of Science and Technology Innovation stated that the competition will be conducted online, and participants will include data science, urban research, and disaster risk management experts from countries such as China, Canada, Singapore, Italy, Spain, Kenya, Nigeria, and Saudi Arabia. The statement states that the theme of this competition is "Reducing Disaster Risk through Open Innovation", aiming to enhance the disaster resilience of climate fragile and water stressed areas through digital technology, open data systems, and cross-border cooperation. The participating teams will use artificial intelligence, machine learning, and geospatial analysis technologies to develop innovative digital solutions, with a focus on predicting the expansion of informal cities and their impact on flood risk. The statement also stated that this event can serve as a dynamic testing ground, providing evidence-based solutions and providing a basis for urban policy formulation and planning. The final results will be presented at the G20 Research and Innovation Ministerial Meeting on September 23, providing reference for high-level discussions on climate adaptation, urban resilience, and other related topics.
