National standard for designing elderly friendly furniture released

2025-08-26

Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation (National Standards Commission) approved the release of the national standard "Design Guidelines for Elderly friendly Furniture", which will be officially implemented on February 1, 2026. This standard is based on the actual needs and physiological and psychological characteristics of the elderly, and proposes detailed design requirements from the dimensions of appearance materials, intelligence, and functional configuration of elderly friendly furniture, aiming to improve the adaptability of furniture products to the needs of the elderly. This standard specifies the potential risks that should be considered in the design of exterior materials for elderly friendly furniture. For example, the main color of the product should be a soft neutral color such as light beige, and the auxiliary color should be a low saturation warm color such as light yellow. It should form a moderate contrast with the color of the wall and floor, so that the elderly can clearly identify the edges and reduce the occurrence of bumps. Encourage the use of natural and environmentally friendly materials, avoid using materials with pungent odors or allergies, and prioritize the use of high flame retardant materials for soft furniture such as sofas. The height and angle of the product should be designed as adjustable as possible, and the exposed parts should be smooth and smooth. The overall structure should be stable and sturdy, and the armrests should have anti slip performance. The seat cushions and other easily dirty parts should be easy to replace and disassemble for washing. The standard emphasizes that intelligent design should follow the principle of simplicity and practicality, and advocates the introduction of intelligent design suitable for the elderly. The interactive form of intelligent applications should be easy to learn and understand, and the operation prompts should be clear and direct, and can be adjusted according to the user's cognitive level. The controller and control system should be compatible with the functionality and usage environment of the furniture, and the operation process should be simplified as much as possible to avoid the danger caused by misoperation. If the product has remote health monitoring function, relevant data needs to be fed back in real time to authorized family members, guardians, or medical staff. In addition, the standard also requires that functional configuration design should closely adhere to aging requirements. Among them, product functions should be configured based on the actual needs of elderly users, and if necessary, aging friendly components with auxiliary functions can be added, such as anti slip foot pads, armrests, backrests, etc. for seat products, auxiliary lighting, support handles, lifting hangers, etc. for cabinet products, and safety guardrails, health monitoring and warning devices, lifting and turning devices, etc. for bed and mattress products. The product size should be designed based on the physical data of the elderly, and the recommended values for the aging functional dimensions of commonly used furniture should be listed.
