The 34th Chinese (Jiangsu) aid medical team to Zanzibar recently successfully performed laparoscopic splenectomy on a 7-year-old child at Rumba Hospital. This is the first laparoscopic splenectomy surgery for children in the local area, filling the technical gap in minimally invasive splenectomy for children in the region. The child suffered from severe splenic hyperfunction due to sickle cell anemia, with significant long-term reduction in blood cells and frequent dependence on blood transfusion therapy. The enlarged spleen leads to abdominal distension and significant abdominal pain, seriously affecting the quality of life. The family members stated that the sister of the child unfortunately passed away in childhood due to the same condition, and splenectomy has become a key means of improving the child's condition. After fully evaluating the patient's condition, the medical team collaborated with local doctors to develop a personalized surgical plan. Director Song Yan of the General Surgery Department served as the main surgeon, Director Niu Xiaobing of the Urology Department served as the assistant, and local doctor Rushdie assisted in completing the surgery. The surgery lasted for over an hour, with almost no significant bleeding during the operation. The postoperative recovery of the child was smooth, and vital signs were stable. Chen Wei, the captain of the medical team, said, "This surgery is an important achievement of China Africa medical cooperation and an extension of our previous' Laparoscopic Surgery Week 'series of activities. Through' transmission, assistance, and guidance ', we hope to bring advanced medical concepts and technologies to local doctors and help improve local medical service capabilities." Local doctor Rushdie said, "In my career, this is the first time I have participated in laparoscopic splenectomy surgery for children. Chinese doctors are professional, meticulous, and calm, which has benefited me greatly and set an example for us to learn from Yaxin, the head of the Department of Surgery at Rumba Hospital, commented, "The Chinese medical team has not only brought new life to the children, but also promoted the improvement of the hospital's minimally invasive surgery level. This type of high difficulty surgery used to be our difficulty, but now it has become possible under the guidance of Chinese doctors, opening up a new path for minimally invasive treatment of local children in the future
