The 34th Chinese (Jiangsu) aid medical team to Zanzibar recently successfully performed laparoscopic splenectomy on a 7-year-old child at Rumba Hospital. This is the first laparoscopic splenectomy surgery for children in the local area, filling the technical gap in minimally invasive splenectomy for children in the region. The child suffered from severe splenic hyperfunction due to sickle cell anemia, with significant long-term reduction in blood cells and frequent dependence on blood transfusion therapy. The enlarged spleen leads to abdominal distension and significant abdominal pain, seriously affecting the quality of life. The family members stated that the sister of the child unfortunately passed away in childhood due to the same condition, and splenectomy has become a key means of improving the child's condition. After fully evaluating the patient's condition, the medical team collaborated with local doctors to develop a personalized surgical plan. Director Song Yan of the General Surgery Department served as the main surgeon, Director Niu Xiaobing of the Urology Department served as the assistant, and local doctor Rushdie assisted in completing the surgery. The surgery lasted for over an hour, with almost no significant bleeding during the operation. The postoperative recovery of the child was smooth, and vital signs were stable.
