Viewing China's Economic Vitality from the Perspective of New Occupations
2025-08-21
Behind the career transition, there is a deep adjustment of economic structure and a dynamic reassessment of human capital value. It is not an easy turnaround, but a transformation from cocoon to butterfly. It requires hard work to adhere to the principle of "investing in people", focus on bridging the knowledge gap and skill gap, promote career rejuvenation and iteration, and synchronize with human development and improvement. This can fully unleash the vitality of innovation and creation, and compete to burst out on weekends. Check in with friends at an internet famous coffee shop. During the conversation, the store manager joked, "Many people in the industry claim to be managers, while others say they are 'boiling' managers. Now we have a 'scientific name' called 'coffee processors'." It turns out that the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security recently officially released the seventh batch of new professions, including 17 new professions such as elderly care service providers, cross-border e-commerce operation managers, drone group flight planners, decoration butlers, and 42 new job types, including substitute tea processors and coffee processors. Previously referred to as catering workers, now they have exclusive titles. This change reflects the society's awareness and acceptance of new professions. Since the restart of the new round of job postings, China has added 110 new professions. Comparing the two editions of the Occupational Classification Dictionary in 2022 and 2015, we can better appreciate the rapid changes - out of 1639 occupations, 158 are newly added occupations, accounting for nearly 10%. Occupation reflects social relationships and forms linked by social division of labor. Behind the career transition, there is a deep adjustment of economic structure and a dynamic reassessment of the value of human capital. Through new professions, one can glimpse the vitality of the Chinese economy. Looking at the supply side, there is a pulse of new quality productivity. The rapid development and deep application of digital technology have given rise to new forms of employment. For example, in recent years, the iteration and upgrading of artificial intelligence technology have empowered various industries and changed the employment pattern. Generative artificial intelligence system operators, artificial intelligence digital human trainers, and other professionals are gradually entering new professions and job types. The implementation and application of new technologies not only create new job divisions, but also empower traditional professions to transform and upgrade. The new track of employment often emerges in areas where new quality productivity is flourishing. Looking at the consumer end, there is a strong demand for high-quality products. China's per capita GDP has stabilized at more than 13000 US dollars for two consecutive years, and is in the critical period of consumption upgrading. Currently, residents' consumption is upgrading towards development oriented, enjoyment oriented, and quality oriented, with increasingly personalized and diversified demands. A large number of new professions, such as health caregivers, study tour guides, and home decoration managers, are growing rapidly in a more segmented consumer demand. New demand drives new supply, providing workers with more diverse career development paths. To be reborn is not an easy turn, but a transformation from cocoon to butterfly, which requires hard work. It should be noted that new industries that nurture new professions often break through traditional industrial models, and some traditional regulatory measures are not applicable to them, which to some extent breeds the problem of wild growth. For example, drone pilots became one of the first new professions in 2019, and the talent gap formed by the rapid development of the low altitude economy has also caused some people to have wild ideas. Some institutions have incomplete qualifications, chaotic fees, and even offer "fast track" services to attract customers, claiming to provide "guaranteed employment". The faster the growth period, the more governance cannot be absent. Accelerating the formation of an inclusive and prudent regulatory environment, improving professional standards and entry thresholds, regulating professional certification and talent cultivation are necessary to safeguard the healthy development of new industries. The transformation of momentum and the shift towards new business formats will inevitably lead to structural contradictions in employment. To better match the supply of positions and talents, high-quality vocational education is indispensable. In October last year, the "Opinions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council on Deepening the Reform of Industrial Workers' Team Construction" was issued, which clearly stated that enterprises should fully extract and use employee education funds in accordance with regulations, ensuring that more than 60% are used for frontline employee education and training. In reality, many companies are also exploring beneficial approaches to lifelong learning and skill upgrading for their employees. Adhering to the principle of "investing in people", focusing on bridging the knowledge and skills gap, and promoting the synchronization of career rejuvenation and human development, can fully unleash the vitality of innovation and creation. The metabolism of professions reflects the development and changes of the times. The continuous emergence of emerging professions is a vivid footnote to the vitality of society. General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized: "Based on the new trends of economic and social development and the new expectations of the people for a high-quality life, we will continuously refine and optimize social division of labor, vigorously develop new formats and models, actively explore and cultivate new occupational sequences, and develop new employment growth points. We will actively embrace new changes, accelerate the shaping of new momentum, and new opportunities are ahead, and a new future is at our feet. (New Society)
