The MTR Corporation Limited (MTR) announced on the 20th that since the launch of the "Cat and Dog Companion" light rail pilot program more than three months ago, over 1300 passengers have purchased the "Cat and Dog Companion Certificate". After careful evaluation, the plan will become a regular service starting from September and will continue to use relevant rules to promote community integration. The plan will be launched for trial on the entire light rail line from May 1st, allowing every pet owner to bring their cats and dogs on the light rail every Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday. The originally planned two month trial period has been extended to four months, and now it will become a regular service starting from September, still only open on weekends and public holidays. While taking into account the travel needs of different passengers, efforts will be made to build a friendly riding environment. According to regulations, passengers carrying cats and dogs must purchase and hold a "Cat and Dog Companion Certificate" in addition to paying their own fare normally, except for police dogs and guide dogs. Pet owners are required to carry their cats and dogs on the light rail according to the specified time, location, and method. MTR Corporation stated that during the trial period, the company conducted an opinion survey covering passengers carrying pets and non pet owners. Over 95% of the respondents gave positive feedback on the plan, recognizing MTR's efforts in promoting inclusive communities. MTR also invited volunteers from the Hong Kong Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Asia Animal Fund to take cats and dogs on the light rail and observe on site. It was found that over 90% of pet owners were able to comply with the boarding rules, and their pets behaved calmly and harmoniously with other passengers while riding. MTR Corporation's operations and local railway manager, Li Wanling, stated that MTR will continue to communicate with stakeholders, monitor the implementation situation, and strive to provide passengers with a safe and comfortable travel experience. Light Rail is a light railway transportation system in the northwest New Territories of Hong Kong, operated by MTR Corporation, mainly serving the short distance travel needs within the community.
