Reporters learned from the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the 18th that researchers from the institute successfully revealed the internal relationship between the morphology of human cerebral cortex and the connection of white matter fibers. In the past, academia was accustomed to studying the shape of the cerebral cortex separately from the connections of white matter fibers, ignoring the global mechanisms underlying their coupling. ”Fan Lingzhong, the corresponding author of the paper and a researcher at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said. In this study, researchers creatively decomposed the complex folding morphology of the cortex into geometric patterns of different "frequencies" using high-resolution multimodal magnetic resonance imaging technology, and depicted the distribution of connection points of the main white matter fiber bundles on the surface of the cortex. It was found that the geometric patterns of the cortex can accurately predict the distribution of fiber bundles, just like how terrain determines the direction of rivers. We refer to this precisely measurable close fitting relationship as' white matter fiber cortical geometric coupling '(TGC).
