Bujumbura news: The groundbreaking ceremony for the Tanzania Burundi transnational standard gauge railway project (referred to as the Tanzania Burundi Railway Project for short) contracted by China Railway Consortium was held in Musongati, an important mining town in the central part of the Republic of Burundi, on the 16th. President Ndayismiye of Burundi and Prime Minister Majaliwa of Tanzania jointly attended the ceremony and laid the foundation for the project. Representatives from transportation, finance and other relevant departments of the two countries, partners such as Tanzania Railway Company and China Railway Group, as well as media and local residents, nearly 20000 guests from all walks of life gathered at the scene to witness together. Ndayishmiye said in his speech: "The launch of the Tanzania Burundi Railway Project is of decisive and historic significance for Burundi, especially in promoting the country to realize its development vision in 2040 and 2060. The Tambu Railway project is planned to be completed and opened to traffic around 2030. After the project is put into operation, it will significantly reduce regional transportation costs, activate bilateral and regional trade vitality, and comprehensively drive the development of mineral resources, agricultural trade, cross-border investment, and tourism.
