Chinese scientists have increased the energy density and endurance of lithium batteries by 2-3 times

Recently, Chinese researchers have broken through the bottleneck of traditional lithium-ion batteries in terms of energy density and application performance, and developed soft pack battery cells with energy density exceeding 600 watt hours/kg and module batteries with energy density of 480 watt hours/kg. Their performance indicators have directly improved the energy density and endurance of existing lithium-ion batteries by 2-3 times. With the rapid development of emerging fields such as electric transportation, low altitude economy, consumer electronics, and humanoid robots, the demand for high-energy, long-range rechargeable batteries is becoming increasingly urgent. Energy density is the core indicator of batteries, and how to store more energy with lighter weight and smaller volume is a technical challenge that researchers from various countries are striving to overcome. Lithium metal batteries are regarded as a new generation battery technology that solves the performance bottleneck and endurance of existing batteries due to their theoretical energy density far higher than traditional lithium-ion batteries. But currently, its electrolyte design is difficult to simultaneously meet the requirements of battery energy output and cycle life improvement. After years of technological innovation and breakthroughs, the research team and collaborators at Tianjin University have pioneered the "delocalization" design concept for high-energy metal lithium battery electrolytes, breaking the traditional electrolyte design's reliance on dominant solvation structures and achieving a dual improvement in energy density and comprehensive performance. The related research results were published in the international academic journal Nature on August 13th. The team leader and professor at the School of Materials Science and Technology, Tianjin University, Hu Wenbin, introduced that through this innovation, the research team has achieved the performance goals of the high-energy density battery "Battery600" and successfully achieved the scalability of the high-energy density battery pack "Pack480", laying an important foundation for the future application of lithium metal batteries. At the same time, this technology also combines excellent cycling stability and safety features. At present, relying on national level platforms such as the National Energy Storage Technology Industry Education Integration Innovation Platform of Tianjin University and the National Key Laboratory of Precious Metal Functional Materials, the team is actively promoting the technological transformation and application verification of related achievements. A high-energy metal lithium battery pilot production line has been built and successfully applied to three models of micro all electric unmanned aerial vehicles in China, which has increased the endurance time of existing batteries by 2.8 times. It is reported that the team has currently mastered the core technology of the entire chain of high-energy lithium batteries, including materials, electrolytes, electrodes, and batteries. All raw materials and key technologies are independently controllable, and the team has high consistency mass production capacity. It is expected to be fully put into operation in the second half of this year. (New Society)
