Approaching the world's first megawatt level floating wave power generation device, the waves transform into a "mobile power bank"

A silver gray triangular device undulates with the waves in the waters south of Zhuhai, Guangdong. It is 27 meters high, weighs about 6000 tons, and has a flat area of over 3500 square meters, equivalent to the size of about 8 basketball courts. This is the world's first independently developed megawatt level floating wave energy generation device "Nankun" in China, with a daily power generation capacity of up to 10000 kilowatt hours, which can meet the daily electricity needs of about 1500 households. Wave energy is mainly generated by the periodic movement of seawater in the horizontal direction caused by the action of wind. In the ocean, a huge wave can throw 13 tons of rocks 20 meters high, with astonishing energy. It is estimated that the wave energy available for development and utilization in the global ocean reaches 2 to 3 billion kilowatts, which is close to or even exceeds 100 Three Gorges hydropower stations. Many islands are far away from the land power grid and mainly rely on diesel engines for power supply, resulting in high power generation costs and environmental pressures. China has a long coastline, a large marine land area, and abundant wave energy resources, which can effectively reduce the proportion of diesel power generation on islands. ”Liang Xiaobing, Deputy Chief Engineer of Guangdong Electric Power Research Institute of Southern Power Grid, said that the wave energy generation device is equivalent to installing a "mobile power bank" on the remote islands and reefs. It is not easy to turn the turbulent waves into power generation helpers. The two most difficult hurdles to overcome are. Firstly, improve energy conversion efficiency. The conversion of wave energy into electrical energy requires three levels of conversion: the capture device absorbs wave energy, converts it into mechanical energy through the transmission device, and then converts it into electrical energy through the generator set. The energy loss is relatively high, so the previous device capacity was only a few hundred kilowatts. Guangdong power grid technology expert Wang Wei introduced that the "Nankun" adopts a triangular design in appearance, absorbing as much waves as possible while maintaining stability. Not only that, the "Nankun" also adopts adaptive wave power generation technology, which automatically adjusts the generator set according to the size of the waves, achieving "full staff on duty" during high waves and "shift rest" during low waves, turning the originally fluctuating waves into continuous, stable, and smooth current, with an energy capture efficiency of about 28%, reaching international leadership. Secondly, ensure the reliable operation of the equipment. The equipment is located in the ocean, capable of withstanding both typhoons and seawater. When the wind and waves are raging, the "Nankun" will activate a one click diving mode, dive to a safe depth, and resist the invasion of typhoons. As of now, the "Nankun" has successfully withstood the test of typhoons such as "Capricorn", "Ginkgo", and "Wipha", and can withstand waves up to 5.5 meters high. The 'Nankun' has undergone anti-corrosion design according to the standards for ships that can go out to sea and has passed the certification of China Classification Society, "said Wang Wei. In addition to wave energy, tidal energy, tidal energy, temperature difference energy, salt difference energy, etc. are all usable marine green renewable energy sources. As of now, China's installed capacity for wave energy, tidal energy, and tidal energy operation ranks first, second, and third in the world, respectively. The ocean energy equipment is basically synchronized with the international advanced level, and has accumulated rich engineering and technical experience, laying a good foundation for achieving large-scale utilization. The Guiding Opinions on Promoting the Large scale Utilization of Ocean Energy issued this year propose to strive for the installed capacity of ocean energy to reach 400000 kilowatts by 2030. Support the construction of pilot projects for ocean energy utilization, summarize and promote pilot experience, steadily increase project scale, promote cost reduction through scale, and drive industrial development. The relevant person in charge of the New Energy and Renewable Energy Department of the National Energy Administration stated that in the next step, the National Energy Administration will work with relevant departments to solidly promote the survey of marine energy resources in pilot areas and timely promote it in coastal areas across the country; Actively promote the simultaneous development of offshore wind power and wave energy, and improve the efficiency of ocean resource development; Strengthen policy guidance and institutional guarantees, and accelerate the large-scale utilization of ocean energy.
