He furrowed his brow slightly, his eyes fixed on the yellowed leaves of the book, picked up a wet brush to flatten the wrinkled and broken paper, and then pieced it together with a brush and tweezers. This is a crucial step in the restoration of ancient books, and Zang Chunhua dare not neglect it. The Anhui Provincial Library, established in 1913, has abundant ancient book resources. As one of the earliest public libraries in China, it houses over 350000 volumes of ancient books. In January 2025, Anhui Provincial Library was selected as a "National Ancient Book Restoration Center". As an ancient book restorer in the Historical Literature Department of Anhui Provincial Library, 39 year old Zang Chunhua and five other colleagues have been repeating the processes of paper matching, patching, and binding for years. Repairing an ancient book can take as short as a few days, as long as several months, or even longer, "said Zang Chunhua. Patience, meticulousness, and a sense of responsibility are essential for engaging in ancient book restoration work. In the seemingly repetitive and monotonous restoration time, ancient book restorers can also find their own pleasure. Some ancient books have interesting content that allows us to understand the lives of ancient people. The binding and damage of each book are different, and seemingly repetitive work actually has various changes, so we have expectations for each book, "said Geng Ning, an ancient book restorer born in 1985. In 2022, Zhou Yahan was transferred from the reading post to the ancient book restoration post, and she has a special understanding of "book repair". I used to work at the reading post and often had to explain to readers that the books they wanted to read couldn't be accessed temporarily because they were damaged and couldn't be flipped over, and needed to be repaired before they could be read. After coming to the repair post, I would inadvertently repair those books, which gave me a great sense of achievement, "Zhou Yahan smiled and introduced. The restoration of ancient books is not only a technical activity, but also a process of refining one's character. Jin Xin, who couldn't sit still in his first few years of employment, is now able to calm down and gradually become proficient in repair techniques.
